Description

API 16A BOP Shear Ram Assembly for Oilfield Blowout Preventer

SGPE supplies API 16A BOP Shear Ram Assembly for ram type blowout preventers used in oil and gas drilling, workover, well testing, completion, well intervention, wellhead pressure control and BOP stack maintenance.

As a critical cutting and closing component inside a ram BOP, the shear ram assembly helps cut specified drill pipe, tubing or other oilfield tubulars when a well requires emergency shut-in. At the same time, it supports pressure isolation through the BOP stack during demanding well control operations.

Correct replacement depends on more than nominal bore size and working pressure. The shear ram assembly also needs to match the BOP model, ram cavity, bonnet, piston, hydraulic closing system, front seal, top seal, ram rubber and tubular data. For this reason, SGPE reviews BOP nameplates, old ram photos, drawings or sample dimensions before quotation. This matching step helps reduce field mismatch, modification work, maintenance delay and unnecessary rig downtime.

In addition to complete shear ram assemblies, SGPE supplies blind shear ram assembly, BSR assembly, pipe ram assembly, blind ram assembly, variable bore ram, ram block, BOP shear ram block, BOP ram rubber, BOP front seal, BOP top seal, BOP ram seal kit, piston, bonnet, spherical packer and other API 16A ram BOP parts.

Customers can source standard replacement parts, customized replacement parts or complete BOP spare parts packages for U type BOP, SH type BOP and other common oilfield ram BOP structures.

What Is a BOP Shear Ram Assembly?

A BOP shear ram assembly is a complete ram system installed inside an oilfield ram blowout preventer. It normally includes the ram block, cutting area, front seal, top seal, ram rubber and related retaining parts.

When the hydraulic operating system closes the BOP, two ram assemblies move toward the bore center. The cutting edges then contact the drill pipe, tubing or specified tubular, shear it and help the BOP close the wellbore.

Different ram types solve different well control problems. A pipe ram seals around a fixed pipe size. A blind ram closes the bore when no pipe remains inside the BOP. A variable bore ram seals around several pipe sizes within its rated range. By contrast, a shear ram assembly handles emergency tubular cutting when pipe movement becomes impossible or when the well condition requires fast pressure control.

Buyers often search this product with terms such as API 16A BOP Shear Ram Assembly, BOP shear ram assembly, blowout preventer shear ram, blind shear ram assembly, BSR assembly, shear ram for blowout preventer, BOP shear ram replacement, API 16A ram BOP parts, ram BOP spare parts, BOP ram rubber, BOP front seal and BOP top seal.

Main Components of a BOP Shear Ram Assembly

A shear ram assembly may vary by BOP model. However, the main parts usually work together to support cutting, movement and sealing.

Component Main Function
Ram Block Carries the cutting and sealing structure
Cutting Area Contacts and shears specified drill pipe, tubing or oilfield tubulars
Front Seal Helps create sealing contact at the bore center after ram closure
Top Seal Helps seal between the ram and BOP body
Ram Rubber Provides elastic sealing performance under well pressure
Seal Retainer Holds sealing parts in the correct position
Guide Surface Supports smooth movement inside the BOP ram cavity
Inserts or Fasteners Support assembly, replacement and sealing according to BOP structure

For serious wear, damaged sealing areas or unclear old part numbers, a complete BOP shear ram assembly is usually the safer replacement choice. For routine BOP maintenance, customers may only need BOP ram rubber, front seal, top seal or a BOP ram seal kit.

Why Correct BOP Ram Matching Matters

A shear ram assembly cannot be selected only by bore size and pressure rating. For example, two 13-5/8 inch 10,000 psi ram BOPs may use different ram cavities, seal profiles and guide surfaces. Even when the pressure rating looks the same, the ram may not fit if the internal structure differs.

For replacement orders, our team checks the BOP model, nameplate information, ram cavity width, guide surface, front seal shape, top seal groove, ram block size, closing direction, bonnet structure, piston structure, old ram wear condition, pipe data and oilfield service condition. This review helps customers reduce wrong BOP ram selection, field modification, delayed maintenance and extra rig downtime.

Oilfield Applications

SGPE API 16A BOP Shear Ram Assembly is used in oil and gas well control systems where the BOP stack needs reliable emergency closure, tubular shearing and pressure isolation. It is suitable for land drilling rig BOP stacks, offshore drilling rig BOP stacks, oil and gas workover rigs, well testing pressure control systems, completion operations, well intervention operations and snubbing service.

This shear ram assembly is also used in wellhead pressure control equipment, BOP stack maintenance, ram BOP spare parts replacement and emergency well control spare parts preparation. For oilfield BOP repair workshops and service bases, it can support routine BOP overhaul, old ram replacement, seal replacement and drilling rig spare parts inventory planning.

Many customers purchase shear ram assemblies together with pipe ram assemblies, blind ram assemblies, variable bore rams, BOP ram rubbers, front seals, top seals, spherical packers, pistons and bonnets. Package supply helps drilling contractors, workover contractors, well testing companies and BOP maintenance teams prepare compatible spare parts before rig operation, repair work or field service.

Shear Ram Assembly, Blind Shear Ram Assembly and BSR Assembly

A shear ram assembly mainly cuts specified drill pipe, tubing or oilfield tubulars inside the BOP bore. In many projects, buyers need a blind shear ram assembly, also called a BSR assembly. This type cuts the tubular and helps seal the bore after closure.

Blind shear rams need both cutting and sealing performance, so they usually require stricter confirmation of ram structure, seal profile, material route and shear condition. Before ordering, buyers should confirm whether they need a shear ram assembly, blind shear ram assembly, BSR assembly, pipe ram assembly, blind ram assembly, variable bore ram, ram block only or sealing kit only.

If the RFQ only says “BOP ram” or “shear ram,” SGPE will check the BOP model and oilfield application before quotation. This helps avoid wrong supply, BOP stack mismatch and field modification.

Pipe Data Needed for Shear Ram Selection

The shear capability of a BOP shear ram assembly depends on the ram design, pipe data and BOP closing system. Pipe OD, pipe grade and wall thickness can affect the required shearing force, so tubular details should be confirmed before final selection.

Pipe Information Why It Matters
Pipe OD Confirms the tubular size to be sheared
Pipe Grade Affects required shearing force
Wall Thickness Influences cutting load and ram selection
Tubular Type Helps identify drill pipe, tubing, casing or special tubular
Tool Joint or Upset Area Needs separate confirmation because it may not match normal pipe body shearing conditions
Service Condition Confirms standard, sour, high-temperature or low-temperature oilfield service
BOP Closing System Helps check whether the existing BOP can provide suitable closing force

For critical well control projects, buyers should provide the end-user specification or BOP stack requirement. After that, SGPE can review the replacement direction and confirm whether the requested BOP shear ram assembly fits the project condition.

Common Pipe Information for RFQ

RFQ Item Example Format
Pipe Type Drill pipe, tubing, casing or special tubular
Pipe OD 3-1/2 inch, 4-1/2 inch, 5 inch, 5-1/2 inch
Pipe Grade E75, X95, G105, S135 or project-specific grade
Wall Thickness Standard wall or heavy wall, with exact thickness if available
Shearing Position Pipe body, tool joint, upset area or unknown
Service Standard service, H2S service or sour service
End-User Requirement BOP stack requirement, rig specification or maintenance document

Tool joint, heavy wall pipe and special upset areas should not be assumed shearable unless the BOP model, ram design and closing system support the condition.

Compatible Ram BOP Structures

SGPE supplies BOP shear ram assembly options for U type BOP, SH type BOP and other common oilfield ram BOP structures. Different BOP designs may use different ram widths, seal grooves, guide surfaces and rubber profiles. For this reason, a shear ram assembly should not be selected only by nominal bore and pressure rating.

For example, two BOPs may both be 11 inch 5,000 psi models, but their ram cavities and sealing profiles may not be the same. In this case, detailed structure review helps confirm whether the replacement direction is practical.

For BOP repair workshops, SGPE can support replacement according to old samples. This works well when the BOP model is old, the original part number is unclear or the end user cannot provide a full drawing.

Materials and Sealing Options

A BOP shear ram assembly faces high pressure, cutting force, mechanical impact and repeated closing movement in oilfield well control service. Material strength and sealing performance both affect field reliability.

SGPE selects suitable alloy steel and sealing materials according to working pressure, temperature class, well fluid, pipe data and sour service requirement. For H2S service, customers should clearly mention sour gas, H2S, NACE or end-user material requirements during the RFQ stage.

Service Condition Common Requirement
Standard Oilfield Service Suitable material and seals for normal drilling or workover use
High-Temperature Service Heat-resistant sealing material according to project requirement
Low-Temperature Service Low-temperature sealing material according to field condition
H2S Service Material and seal review for sour gas or H2S exposure
Sour Service Material route and document package reviewed according to customer specification

Common sealing parts include top seal, front seal, ram rubber, side sealing components, seal retaining parts and BOP ram seal kit. Since rubber parts age during storage and field operation, many customers order extra BOP ram seal kits together with the shear ram assembly.

Forged and Cast Ram Options

Different BOP ram products may use forged or cast structures according to pressure rating, BOP model, customer requirement and original design. For shear ram assemblies, many oilfield customers prefer high-strength forged material because the ram must handle cutting force and well control duty.

Structure Option Typical Selection Reason
Forged Ram Body Preferred for high-strength replacement or demanding well control service
Cast Ram Body Used when the original BOP design or customer requirement allows it
Customized Structure Used when the buyer provides drawing, sample or exact replacement dimensions

SGPE can review the technical requirement and recommend a suitable material route. If the end user requires forged construction, MTC, hardness record, inspection report or additional test document, please mention it during quotation.

Frequently Asked Questions About API 16A BOP Shear Ram Assemblies

1. What is an API 16A BOP Shear Ram Assembly used for?

An API 16A BOP Shear Ram Assembly helps a ram type blowout preventer cut specified drill pipe, tubing or oilfield tubulars during emergency well control operations. Drilling contractors, workover teams and wellhead pressure control companies use it when the BOP stack needs fast closure and pressure isolation. It plays an important role in oil and gas drilling, workover, well testing, completion, well intervention and BOP stack maintenance.

2. What parts are included in a BOP shear ram assembly?

A BOP shear ram assembly usually includes the ram block, cutting structure, ram rubber, front seal, top seal and related retaining parts. The exact assembly scope depends on the BOP model, ram cavity and original structure.

Some customers need a complete shear ram assembly, while others only need replacement ram rubber, BOP front seal, BOP top seal or a shear ram block. SGPE can review old ram photos or drawings before confirming the supply scope.

3. What is the difference between a shear ram assembly and a blind shear ram assembly?

A shear ram assembly mainly cuts specified drill pipe, tubing or tubulars inside the BOP bore. By comparison, a blind shear ram assembly, also called a BSR assembly, cuts the tubular and also helps seal the bore after closure. Because blind shear rams need both cutting and sealing performance, buyers should confirm the BOP model, pressure rating, pipe data, sealing profile and service condition before ordering.

4. Can I select a BOP shear ram assembly only by bore size and pressure rating?

No. Bore size and pressure rating only provide the basic direction. A correct BOP shear ram replacement also needs the BOP model, ram cavity size, front seal profile, top seal groove, guide surface, closing direction and old ram structure. For example, two 13-5/8 inch 10,000 psi ram BOPs may use different ram cavities and sealing designs. SGPE recommends sending the BOP nameplate, old ram photos and key dimensions before quotation.

5. What pipe data should I provide for shear ram selection?

Please provide the pipe outside diameter, pipe grade, wall thickness and tubular type. These details help SGPE review the shearing condition and choose the proper BOP shear ram assembly.

If the application involves drill pipe, tubing, casing, heavy wall pipe, tool joint or a special upset area, please mention it clearly. Pipe grade and wall thickness can affect the required shearing force, so they should not be ignored in a shear ram RFQ.

6. What bore sizes and pressure ratings can SGPE supply?

SGPE supplies common BOP shear ram assembly options for 7-1/16 inch, 11 inch, 13-5/8 inch, 16-3/4 inch, 18-3/4 inch and 21-1/4 inch ram BOPs. SGPE can also review old BOP models, special bore sizes and replacement shear ram requirements according to drawings, samples or nameplate information.

7. Can SGPE supply shear ram assemblies for U type and SH type BOP?

Yes. SGPE can supply compatible shear ram assembly options for U type BOP, SH type BOP and other common oilfield ram BOP structures. Since different BOP designs may use different ram widths, seal grooves and rubber profiles, SGPE checks the actual structure before confirming compatibility. For replacement orders, please send the BOP model, bore size, working pressure, old ram photos and required ram type.

8. Can SGPE provide H2S-resistant BOP shear ram assemblies?

Yes. SGPE can provide H2S-resistant BOP ram options for sour oil and gas field service. If the well contains H2S, sour gas or corrosive well fluids, please mention the sour service requirement during the RFQ stage.

Then, SGPE can review the material route, sealing material, service condition and document requirement according to the customer’s specification. Buyers may also request related ram rubber, front seal and top seal options for sour service.

9. Can SGPE supply BOP ram rubber, front seal and top seal separately?

Yes. SGPE can supply BOP ram rubber, front seal, top seal and BOP ram seal kits separately for oilfield BOP maintenance. Many customers order these parts together with a complete BOP shear ram assembly because rubber parts may age during storage or field operation.

If you only need sealing parts, please provide the BOP model, old seal photos, ram type and dimensions. This helps reduce the risk of wrong rubber or seal selection.

10. How does SGPE check compatibility for a BOP replacement ram?

SGPE checks the BOP nameplate, ram cavity, old ram assembly photos, seal groove, front seal shape, top seal profile and key dimensions. If the original part number is missing, SGPE can still review the old ram structure and suggest a practical replacement direction. This process helps drilling contractors, oilfield service bases and BOP repair workshops avoid field mismatch, delayed installation and unnecessary modification.

11. What documents can SGPE provide for API 16A BOP shear ram assembly orders?

SGPE can prepare project documents according to the order scope and customer requirement. Common documents include commercial invoice, packing list, certificate of conformity, material certificate when applicable, dimensional inspection report when required, product photos and packing photos. If the end user requires MTC, hardness record, inspection report, third-party inspection or a special oilfield document package, please send the document list before quotation.

12. What information should I send to get a fast quotation?

To get a faster and more accurate quotation, please send the BOP model, BOP type, nominal bore size, working pressure, required ram type, pipe OD, pipe grade, wall thickness, service condition, quantity and delivery destination.
