Description
API 6A Tree Cap & Top Connector for Oilfield Christmas Trees
SGPE manufactures and supplies API 6A Tree Caps for surface wellheads and Christmas Trees used in oil production, natural gas production, injection, well testing, workover and well-intervention operations.
Depending on the operator, wellhead manufacturer or RFQ terminology, the same component may also be described as a Christmas Tree Cap, Xmas Tree Cap, Wellhead Tree Cap, Production Tree Cap, Tree Cap Assembly, API 6A Top Connector, Christmas Tree Top Connector or Wellhead Top Connector.
Installed at the uppermost section of a surface Christmas Tree, normally above the Swab Valve, the Tree Cap closes the vertical tree bore during normal production. Its position also provides an upper interface for pressure monitoring and approved well-service access.
SGPE supplies standard and custom Tree Caps for oil wells, natural gas wells, high-pressure wellheads, sour H2S wells, water-injection wells and gas-injection wells. These products can also support wireline and slickline preparation, production logging, bottom-hole pressure surveys, well testing, workover, recompletion, offshore wellheads, onshore MRO and brownfield replacement.
Our project range covers 2,000 psi, 3,000 psi, 5,000 psi, 10,000 psi and 15,000 psi rated working pressures. Available designs include flanged and studded lower connections, RTJ sealing interfaces, forged bodies, sour-service materials, CRA protection, pressure-gauge ports, bleeder connections and project-specific replacement dimensions.
Replacement projects often begin with incomplete information. If the original component is obsolete or the drawing is unavailable, SGPE can work from the nameplate, OEM reference, Swab Valve connection, RTJ details, verified field dimensions and equipment photographs to develop a Replacement API 6A Tree Cap or Replacement Top Connector.
Need an API 6A Tree Cap price or quotation? Send SGPE the nominal size, rated working pressure, vertical bore, mating connection, service conditions and quantity for technical review.

API 6A Tree Cap Pressure Ratings: 2K to 15K
SGPE supplies Tree Caps across the principal working-pressure ranges used on conventional and high-pressure surface wellheads.
| Pressure Class | Rated Working Pressure | Metric Reference | Typical Application |
|---|---|---|---|
| 2K | 2,000 psi | 13.8 MPa | Lower-pressure production wellhead |
| 3K | 3,000 psi | 20.7 MPa | Conventional oil and gas production |
| 5K | 5,000 psi | 34.5 MPa | Production, injection and well servicing |
| 10K | 10,000 psi | 69.0 MPa | High-pressure oil or natural gas well |
| 15K | 15,000 psi | 103.5 MPa | High-pressure gas, deep-well or demanding service |
Higher pressure places greater importance on connection geometry, RTJ condition, material control, dimensional inspection and pressure testing.
A request such as 2-9/16 in 10K API 6A Tree Cap still requires confirmation of the Swab Valve connection, bore, ring groove, service environment and upper interface.
Other common high-intent RFQ descriptions include 3-1/16 in 10K Top Connector, 3-1/16 in 15K Tree Cap, 4-1/16 in 10K Tree Cap and 4-1/16 in 15K High Pressure Tree Cap.
Nominal size and pressure class are therefore the starting point, not the complete specification.
What Is an API 6A Tree Cap?
An API 6A Tree Cap forms the upper closure and service-access interface of a surface Christmas Tree.
A typical production tree may include a Tubing Head Adapter, Lower Master Valve, Upper Master Valve, Tree Cross or Tree Tee, Wing Valves, Choke Valve, Swab Valve and Tree Cap. The Tree Cap normally connects immediately above the Swab Valve.
During production, it closes the upper vertical bore. When approved service access is required, its position provides an interface for suitable equipment after the well has been isolated and pressure has been controlled.
The component therefore does more than simply cover the top of the tree. It must match the pressure-containing equipment below it while preserving the bore and upper interface required by the wellhead design.
Two products may both be described as a 2-9/16 in 10K Tree Cap yet use different RTJ grooves, seal bores, overall heights, plug arrangements or upper connections.
This is why dimensional matching becomes especially important when replacing legacy or obsolete wellhead equipment.
Tree Cap, Christmas Tree Cap and API 6A Top Connector
Oilfield RFQs use several names for this upper-tree component.
Common technical and purchasing terms include API 6A Tree Cap, Christmas Tree Cap, Xmas Tree Cap, Wellhead Tree Cap, Production Tree Cap, Oilfield Tree Cap, Tree Cap Assembly, API 6A Top Connector, Christmas Tree Top Connector and Wellhead Top Connector.
The term Tree Cap usually emphasizes the closure function. Top Connector emphasizes the component’s position at the upper end of the Christmas Tree and its role as a well-service interface.
For quotation and manufacturing, the actual bore, lower connection, seal geometry and mating equipment are more important than the name used on the RFQ.
API 6A Annex K Top Connector Reference Data
API 6A Annex K includes standard Top Connector reference configurations. Selected combinations are shown below for engineering reference.
| Nominal Tree Bore | Rated Working Pressure | ACME Thread Reference | Seal Bore Diameter |

| 5-1/8 in | 10,000 psi | 9 in – 4 TPI ACME-2G | 6.750 in |
| 5-1/8 in | 15,000 psi | 12-1/4 in – 4 TPI ACME-2G | 7.000 in |
| 6-3/8 in | 5,000 psi | 9-1/2 in – 4 TPI ACME-2G | 8.000 in |
| 6-3/8 in | 10,000 psi | 11-1/2 in – 4 TPI ACME-2G | 8.250 in |
These values are engineering references rather than a universal Tree Cap catalogue.
Legacy and manufacturer-specific Christmas Trees may use different arrangements, including 2-1/16 in Tree Caps, 2-9/16 in 10K Tree Caps and custom Top Connectors.
Engineering Note: SGPE verifies the applicable specification, approved manufacturing drawing and purchaser requirements before production.
API 6A Tree Cap Assembly Components
| Component | Main Function |
|---|---|
| Forged Tree Cap Body | Main pressure-containing component |
| Flanged / Studded Lower Interface | Connects Tree Cap to Swab Valve |
| Top / Blanking Plug | Closes upper access opening |
| Collar / Retaining Nut | Secures upper assembly where applicable |
| Pressure Seal | Maintains pressure integrity |
| O-Ring / Back-Up Ring | Supports specified sealing arrangement |
| Bleeder / Vent Port | Provides controlled pressure venting |
| Pressure Gauge Port | Connects monitoring equipment where required |
| RTJ Groove | Provides metal ring-joint sealing |
| Vertical Bore | Maintains access through the upper tree |
| Handling Feature | Supports approved handling |
Not every Tree Cap uses every component shown above. The final arrangement follows the approved design.
A production Tree Cap, High Pressure Top Connector and custom Replacement Tree Cap may therefore use different upper plugs, collars, pressure ports and sealing arrangements.
Any lifting or handling feature should be treated separately from the Tree Cap’s pressure-containing bore and sealing connection and should follow the approved drawing.
API 6A Tree Cap Types and Configurations
Flanged API 6A Tree Cap
A Flanged API 6A Tree Cap uses a flange and applicable RTJ sealing interface at the lower connection.
This configuration is common on oil production Christmas Trees, natural gas wellheads, injection trees and high-pressure surface wellheads.
Before manufacturing, SGPE checks the nominal size, working pressure, vertical bore and RTJ groove.
For a Replacement Flanged Tree Cap, useful field data also include the flange OD, bolt pattern, Swab Valve interface, seal bore and overall height.
Studded API 6A Tree Cap
A Studded API 6A Tree Cap uses an integral studded lower connection and can provide a compact interface above a compatible Swab Valve.
Replacement studded caps require accurate dimensional matching. SGPE normally reviews the stud diameter, stud quantity, bolt circle, RTJ groove, vertical bore, seal bore and overall height.
A drawing or verified field measurement is strongly recommended when replacing a legacy studded Tree Cap.
Custom API 6A Tree Cap and Top Connector
Legacy and operator-specific Christmas Trees do not always match standard catalogue dimensions.
SGPE can manufacture a Custom API 6A Tree Cap or Custom Top Connector around the installed equipment. A custom design may include a project-specific lower connection, bore, RTJ groove, seal bore, overall height, blanking plug, retaining arrangement, gauge port, bleeder connection or upper service interface.
This capability is particularly useful for mature-field MRO, obsolete wellhead replacement, Christmas Tree refurbishment, brownfield modification and replacement of discontinued OEM components.
In these projects, the objective is not simply to duplicate a catalogue number. The new Tree Cap must correctly fit the equipment that remains in service.
Tree Cap with Pressure Gauge or Bleeder Port
A Tree Cap with Pressure Gauge Port provides an interface for suitable pressure-monitoring equipment.
Typical applications include production pressure checks, shut-in pressure monitoring, natural gas well monitoring, water-injection monitoring, gas-injection monitoring, well testing and workover preparation.
Some Tree Cap assemblies also include a separate bleeder or vent connection. SGPE confirms the port size, thread, working pressure and sealing arrangement against the approved design.
Forged API 6A Tree Cap
SGPE manufactures Forged API 6A Tree Caps for demanding surface wellhead service.
Forged construction provides a suitable basis for controlled mechanical properties, material traceability and accurate machining of critical sealing surfaces.
Depending on the approved drawing, machining can include flange faces, RTJ ring grooves, vertical bores, seal bores, stud patterns, upper plug interfaces, gauge and bleeder ports and project-specific Top Connector features.
The final body material depends on working pressure, Material Class, temperature, well-fluid composition and purchaser requirements.
API 6A Temperature Classes
Tree Cap body materials and sealing components must suit the actual operating-temperature range.
| Temperature Class | Minimum °C | Maximum °C | Minimum °F | Maximum °F |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| K | -60 | 82 | -75 | 180 |
| L | -46 | 82 | -50 | 180 |
| N | -46 | 60 | -50 | 140 |
| P | -29 | 82 | -20 | 180 |
| S | -18 | 60 | 0 | 140 |
| T | -18 | 82 | 0 | 180 |
| U | -18 | 121 | 0 | 250 |
| V | 2 | 121 | 35 | 250 |
For quotation, provide the actual minimum ambient temperature and maximum fluid temperature whenever possible.
This gives a more useful engineering basis than simply stating “low-temperature service” or “high-temperature service.”
API 6A Material Classes for Tree Cap Selection
Material Class should reflect the actual well environment rather than the pressure rating alone.
| Material Class | Service Category | General Material Basis |
|---|---|---|
| AA | General Service | Carbon / low-alloy steel, stainless steel or CRA as applicable |
| BB | General Service | Carbon / low-alloy steel, stainless steel or CRA as applicable |
| CC | General Service | Stainless steel or CRA |
| DD | Sour Service | Carbon / low-alloy steel or CRA with applicable sour-service controls |
| EE | Sour Service | Carbon / low-alloy steel or CRA with applicable sour-service controls |
| FF | Sour Service | Stainless steel or CRA |
| HH | Sour Service | CRA protection for applicable retained-fluid wetted surfaces |
| ZZ | Specific Sour Service | Purchaser-defined qualified material system |
For sour service, Material Class alone does not describe the complete corrosive environment.
H2S, CO2, temperature, produced water, chloride content, hardness limits and purchaser requirements can all influence final material selection.
Product Specification Level – PSL
API 6A uses Product Specification Levels to define different levels of manufacturing and quality requirements.
| PSL | General Positioning | Project Review Focus |
|---|---|---|
| PSL 1 | Basic API 6A quality level where applicable | Confirm service and purchase specification |
| PSL 2 | Enhanced quality requirements | Review materials and inspection scope |
| PSL 3 | Higher manufacturing and quality controls | Review service, testing and documentation |
| PSL 4 | Critical-service requirements | Detailed technical review required |
The required PSL should be confirmed together with working pressure, Material Class, service conditions and purchaser requirements.
Sour Service API 6A Tree Cap for H2S Wells
H2S-containing wells require additional attention to material chemistry, hardness, heat treatment, seals and corrosion resistance.
SGPE can review and supply Sour Service API 6A Tree Caps and H2S Service Top Connectors for projects that specify NACE MR0175 / ISO 15156 requirements.
| Sour-Service Data | Why It Matters |
|---|---|
| H2S Concentration / Partial Pressure | Supports sour-service material selection |
| CO2 | Supports corrosion review |
| pH | Influences service environment |
| Produced Water | Defines additional corrosion exposure |
| Chloride Content | Influences corrosion and cracking risk |
| Minimum Temperature | Affects material toughness |
| Maximum Temperature | Affects materials and seals |
| Material Class | Defines project material requirements |
| Hardness Requirement | Supports sour-service controls |
| CRA Requirement | Defines additional corrosion protection |
A note such as “NACE required” may not provide enough information for proper engineering review.
Providing the actual H2S, CO2, temperature and produced-water conditions gives a much stronger basis for material and seal selection.
CRA and Corrosion-Resistant Options
Severe sour, high-CO2, high-chloride or offshore environments may require corrosion protection beyond a conventional alloy-steel body.
Depending on the service conditions, a Tree Cap project may use stainless-steel or CRA components, CRA weld overlay, CRA inlay, nickel-alloy protection or corrosion-resistant sealing areas.
The correct solution depends on the actual fluid environment rather than a generic one-material-fits-all approach.

Oil and Natural Gas Production
Oil and natural gas production are the main applications for API 6A Tree Caps.
SGPE supplies Tree Caps for conventional flowing wells, high-pressure production wells, gas wells, mature fields, Christmas Tree refurbishment and spare-parts programs.
The main selection factors are pressure rating, vertical bore, Swab Valve connection, RTJ interface, material requirements and expected well-service needs.
Water Injection and Gas Injection
Tree Caps also serve water injection, produced-water reinjection, gas reinjection, reservoir-pressure maintenance and enhanced-oil-recovery projects.
Injection fluid chemistry and pressure can affect both material and seal selection. For these projects, provide the injection fluid, operating pressure and temperature where available.
Tree Cap for Wireline, Slickline and Well Testing
The Tree Cap sits at the upper access point of the Christmas Tree, so its vertical bore and upper interface matter during wireline, slickline, production logging and well-testing preparation.
A suitable Wellhead Top Connector may form part of the access arrangement for downhole gauge work, plug operations, bottom-hole pressure surveys, pressure build-up testing, shut-in monitoring and reservoir surveillance.
The Tree Cap does not replace a lubricator, wireline BOP or other intervention pressure-control equipment required for the operation.
Workover, Recompletion and Mature-Well Maintenance
Workover and recompletion projects often require controlled access through the upper tree.
A correctly matched Tree Cap can support preparation for tubing servicing, completion repair, downhole equipment replacement and production restoration.
These projects are also an important source of demand for Replacement API 6A Tree Caps, because operators often prefer to retain the rest of the serviceable Christmas Tree.
Onshore and Offshore Wellheads
SGPE supports Tree Cap projects for both onshore and offshore surface wellheads.
Onshore MRO projects often prioritize replacement compatibility and dimensional identification.
Offshore projects may place greater emphasis on corrosion protection, material traceability, NDE, dimensional control, documentation and third-party inspection.
10K and 15K High Pressure API 6A Tree Caps
Buyers searching for a 10K API 6A Tree Cap supplier, 15K Tree Cap manufacturer, High Pressure Christmas Tree Cap, 10,000 psi Top Connector or 15,000 psi Wellhead Tree Cap should provide more than the working pressure.
| Critical Parameter | High-Pressure Selection Focus |
|---|---|
| Rated Working Pressure | Match complete Christmas Tree |
| Vertical Bore | Maintain required service access |
| Swab Valve Connection | Confirm mating interface |
| RTJ Groove | Confirm exact sealing geometry |
| Body Material | Match pressure-containing requirements |
| Material Class | Match well-fluid environment |
| PSL | Match agreed project quality requirements |
| Temperature | Match actual operating conditions |
| H2S / CO2 | Support material review |
| Seal System | Match fluid, pressure and temperature |
| Upper Interface | Match intended service equipment |
| NDE | Meet agreed inspection plan |
| Hydrotest | Meet applicable testing requirement |
A high-pressure Tree Cap with the correct nominal size can still be incompatible with the existing tree if the sealing geometry or internal bore differs.
This becomes particularly important for 2-9/16 in 10K Tree Caps, 3-1/16 in 10K Top Connectors, 3-1/16 in 15K Tree Caps, 4-1/16 in 10K Tree Caps and 4-1/16 in 15K High Pressure Top Connectors.
For replacement projects, dimensional verification should take priority over nominal designation alone.
Replacement API 6A Tree Cap for Existing Christmas Trees
Replacement is one of the most commercially important Tree Cap applications.
An operator may require a Replacement Tree Cap, Replacement Christmas Tree Cap, Replacement Wellhead Tree Cap or Replacement Top Connector because corrosion has damaged the body or RTJ groove, sealing surfaces have worn, threads have suffered mechanical damage, the original component has become obsolete, or the original manufacturer no longer supports the tree.
Replacement also becomes necessary when an operator wants to refurbish the wellhead without replacing the complete Christmas Tree.
SGPE can develop a replacement configuration around the equipment that remains in service.
Replacement Tree Cap Matching Data
| Existing Equipment Data | Why SGPE Needs It |
|---|---|
| Original Tree Cap Drawing | Confirms complete geometry |
| Christmas Tree Drawing | Shows assembly relationship |
| Nameplate | Identifies basic equipment data |
| OEM / Manufacturer | Helps identify design family |
| Model / Part Number | Supports component identification |
| Working Pressure | Confirms pressure class |
| Nominal Size | Confirms connection reference |
| Vertical Bore | Confirms service-access requirement |
| Swab Valve Top Connection | Confirms mating interface |
| RTJ Groove | Confirms sealing geometry |
| Flange OD | Supports dimensional checking |
| Stud / Bolt Pattern | Confirms mechanical interface |
| Seal Bore | Confirms internal geometry |
| Overall Height | Maintains existing tree geometry |
| Blanking Plug | Confirms upper closure arrangement |
| Gauge / Bleeder Port | Confirms instrumentation interface |
| Upper Interface | Confirms service-equipment compatibility |
| Material Data | Supports service review |
| H2S / CO2 | Supports material selection |
| Field Dimensions | Supports dimensional reconstruction |
| Clear Photographs | Helps identify actual configuration |
Do not select a Replacement Tree Cap from nominal size and pressure rating alone.
One 2-9/16 in 10K Tree Cap may not fit another 2-9/16 in 10K Christmas Tree if the RTJ groove, bore, seal diameter, overall height or upper interface differs.
For MRO procurement, a clear nameplate photograph together with several overall and detail photographs is often the best starting point when original drawings are unavailable.
API 6A Tree Cap vs Top Connector, BHTA and Blind Flange
| Product / Term | Main Meaning | Interchangeability |
|---|---|---|
| API 6A Tree Cap | Upper tree closure and access component | Same general product family as Top Connector |
| API 6A Top Connector | Uppermost tree connector | Commonly used for Tree Cap |
| Christmas Tree Cap | Common purchasing term | Usually refers to Tree Cap / Top Connector |
| Bottom Hole Test Adapter / BHTA | Upper-tree service adapter in selected designs | Requires dimensional verification |
| Blind Flange | Closes a flange opening | Not a direct Tree Cap substitute |
| Tubing Head Adapter | Connects tubing head to Christmas Tree | Different component |
| Adapter / Spacer Spool | Changes connection or provides spacing | Different component |
Legacy documentation may use Bottom Hole Test Adapter or BHTA for selected upper-tree service arrangements.
Because these designs vary, SGPE checks the lower connection, bore, seal geometry and upper interface before assuming that a BHTA and Tree Cap are interchangeable.
Likewise, a Blind Flange can close a pressure opening but does not automatically provide the same bore, plug, monitoring connection or well-service interface as a Tree Cap.
API 6A Tree Cap Price and Quotation Factors
Buyers frequently search for API 6A Tree Cap price, Christmas Tree Cap price, Wellhead Top Connector price, 10K Tree Cap price, 15K Tree Cap quotation, Custom Tree Cap price and Replacement Tree Cap cost.
A single catalogue price cannot accurately represent every configuration because forging size, material, machining, pressure class, sour-service requirements and inspection scope vary from project to project.
| Price Factor | Influence on Quotation |
|---|---|
| Rated Working Pressure | Changes pressure-containing and testing requirements |
| Nominal Size | Influences forging size and machining |
| Vertical Bore | Changes internal geometry |
| Flanged / Studded Connection | Changes machining and bolting |
| RTJ Groove | Defines sealing-interface machining |
| Body Material | Influences raw-material cost |
| Material Class | Changes material and manufacturing requirements |
| Sour Service | Adds material and hardness controls |
| CRA Overlay / Inlay | Adds corrosion-resistant material and processing |
| Temperature Requirement | Can affect materials and seals |
| PSL / Quality Scope | Influences manufacturing and documentation |
| Gauge / Bleeder Port | Adds machining and components |

Final marking follows the approved project documentation and applicable product requirements.
How to Select the Correct API 6A Tree Cap
1. Confirm the Rated Working Pressure
First confirm whether the Christmas Tree requires 2K, 3K, 5K, 10K or 15K service. The Tree Cap must suit the approved pressure rating of the tree.
2. Confirm the Nominal Size and Vertical Bore
Provide the nominal connection size and required minimum bore.
Bore compatibility becomes particularly important when the well requires wireline, slickline, production logging or well-testing access.
3. Identify the Swab Valve Top Connection
Provide the complete mating interface, including nominal size, working pressure, flanged or studded configuration and RTJ groove.
For studded equipment, a verified drawing or bolt pattern gives a stronger basis for dimensional matching.
4. Define the Upper Arrangement
State whether the project requires a blanking plug, retaining collar, pressure-gauge port, bleeder port, special upper service connection or project-specific handling feature.
5. Provide the Well Conditions
Specify oil or gas service, H2S, CO2, produced water, chloride content where relevant, injection fluid and operating temperature.
6. Define Quality Requirements
Include PSL, Material Class, Temperature Class, NDE, hydrostatic testing, PMI, TPI, ITP and documentation requirements where applicable.
7. Provide Existing Equipment Data for Replacement
For a replacement project, send the available drawing, nameplate, OEM reference, model or part number, RTJ details, verified field dimensions and photographs.

Frequently Asked Questions About API 6A Tree Caps
1. What is an API 6A Tree Cap and what does it do on a Christmas Tree?
An API 6A Tree Cap forms the upper closure of a surface Wellhead Christmas Tree. It normally sits directly above the Swab Valve and closes the vertical tree bore during normal oil or gas production.
Oilfield buyers may also call this component a Christmas Tree Cap, Xmas Tree Cap, Wellhead Tree Cap, Production Tree Cap or API 6A Top Connector.
Besides closing the upper bore, the Tree Cap provides an interface for pressure monitoring and approved well-service access. Depending on the tree design, operators may use the upper-tree arrangement when preparing for wireline, slickline, production logging, pressure surveys, well testing or workover operations.
Because the Tree Cap forms part of the wellhead pressure-containing system, buyers should check more than nominal size. Working pressure, vertical bore, Swab Valve connection, RTJ groove, Material Class, temperature and upper interface all affect the final design.
2. Where does an API 6A Tree Cap connect on a Wellhead Christmas Tree?
The API 6A Tree Cap normally connects above the Swab Valve at the upper end of the Christmas Tree vertical bore.
Its lower connection must match the Swab Valve or other approved upper-tree component. Therefore, SGPE checks the connection type, nominal size, pressure rating, RTJ groove, vertical bore and relevant dimensions before confirming the design.
This becomes especially important when buyers need a Replacement Christmas Tree Cap or Replacement Wellhead Top Connector. Two products may carry the same nominal size and pressure rating but still use different flange dimensions, ring grooves, seal bores or upper connections.
For replacement projects, send the existing Swab Valve connection, Tree Cap nameplate, drawing and clear field photographs whenever possible.
3. What sizes and pressure ratings of API 6A Tree Caps can SGPE supply?
SGPE supports 2K, 3K, 5K, 10K and 15K API 6A Tree Cap projects for oil, natural gas, injection, well-testing and workover applications.
Common RFQs include 2-1/16 in Tree Caps, 2-9/16 in Tree Caps, 3-1/16 in Top Connectors and 4-1/16 in High Pressure Tree Caps, together with larger or manufacturer-specific configurations.
Typical commercial searches also include 2-9/16 in 10K Tree Cap, 3-1/16 in 10K Top Connector, 3-1/16 in 15K Tree Cap and 4-1/16 in 15K Wellhead Tree Cap.
However, size and pressure alone do not define the product. SGPE also checks the actual bore, Swab Valve interface, RTJ groove, seal geometry and upper arrangement before manufacturing.
4. How do I select the correct Replacement API 6A Tree Cap for an existing wellhead?
Start with the rated working pressure, nominal size, vertical bore and Swab Valve top connection. Then confirm the RTJ groove, seal bore, flange or studded dimensions, overall height, Material Class and operating conditions.
For a Replacement API 6A Tree Cap, SGPE recommends sending as much existing equipment information as possible. Useful references include the original Tree Cap drawing, Christmas Tree drawing, nameplate, OEM, model, part number and field dimensions.
Clear photographs also help, especially when the original manufacturer no longer supports the equipment or the drawing is unavailable.
Do not select a Replacement Tree Cap from size and pressure alone. For example, one 2-9/16 in 10K Tree Cap may not fit another 2-9/16 in 10K Christmas Tree if the RTJ groove, seal bore, height or upper interface differs.
5. What is the difference between an API 6A Tree Cap, Top Connector, BHTA and Blind Flange?
An API 6A Tree Cap and API 6A Top Connector generally belong to the same upper Christmas Tree product family. “Tree Cap” usually emphasizes the closure function, while “Top Connector” emphasizes its location and service-access role.
A Bottom Hole Test Adapter, or BHTA, may describe a selected upper-tree service arrangement on some legacy or manufacturer-specific equipment. However, BHTA designs vary, so SGPE checks the lower connection, bore, seal geometry and upper interface before treating the terms as interchangeable.
A Blind Flange serves a different purpose. It closes a flanged pressure opening, but it does not automatically provide the same vertical bore, blanking arrangement, pressure-monitoring port or service interface as a Tree Cap.
Therefore, buyers should identify the actual equipment interface rather than selecting only by product name.
6. Can SGPE manufacture both Flanged and Studded API 6A Tree Caps?
Yes. SGPE can manufacture Flanged API 6A Tree Caps and Studded API 6A Tree Caps according to the actual Christmas Tree design.
For a Flanged Tree Cap, provide the nominal size, rated working pressure, vertical bore and RTJ groove. For replacement projects, flange OD, bolt pattern and overall height also help with dimensional matching.
For a Studded Tree Cap, SGPE normally reviews the stud diameter, stud quantity, bolt circle, RTJ groove, bore, seal diameter and overall dimensions.
Because legacy wellheads often use manufacturer-specific geometry, an approved drawing or verified field measurement gives the best basis for a Replacement Flanged Tree Cap or Replacement Studded Top Connector.
7. Can SGPE supply Sour Service API 6A Tree Caps for H2S wells?
Yes. SGPE can review Sour Service API 6A Tree Caps and H2S Service Top Connectors for oil and natural gas projects with sour-service requirements.
Material selection depends on more than a simple “NACE required” note. H2S concentration or partial pressure, CO2, operating temperature, produced water, chloride content, pH, Material Class and hardness limits can all affect the final material system.
Where the project specifies it, SGPE can review requirements related to NACE MR0175 / ISO 15156, together with suitable Material Class and CRA options.
For severe sour or corrosive service, the project may also require stainless-steel or CRA components, CRA overlay, CRA inlay or other corrosion-resistant solutions. SGPE reviews these options against the actual well environment.
8. Can SGPE supply 10K and 15K High Pressure API 6A Tree Caps?
Yes. SGPE supports 10,000 psi and 15,000 psi API 6A Tree Cap projects for high-pressure oil wells, natural gas wells, injection wells, well testing and workover applications.
Common high-pressure inquiries include 10K API 6A Tree Caps, 15K Christmas Tree Caps, 10,000 psi Top Connectors and 15,000 psi Wellhead Tree Caps.
However, pressure rating alone cannot confirm compatibility. SGPE also checks the vertical bore, Swab Valve connection, RTJ groove, Material Class, operating temperature, seal arrangement and service conditions.
This review becomes particularly important for 2-9/16 in 10K, 3-1/16 in 15K and 4-1/16 in 10K or 15K Tree Cap replacement projects.
9. Can an API 6A Tree Cap support wireline, slickline, logging and well testing operations?
Yes. The Tree Cap sits at the upper access point of the Christmas Tree, so its bore and upper interface can support preparation for wireline, slickline, production logging, downhole gauge work, bottom-hole pressure surveys and well-testing operations.
A suitable API 6A Top Connector or Wellhead Tree Cap can provide the upper interface required before operators connect the appropriate well-service equipment.
However, the Tree Cap does not replace a lubricator, wireline BOP or other intervention pressure-control equipment. Operators must select the complete pressure-control system according to the actual well pressure and operating procedure.
When wireline or well testing forms part of the project, SGPE recommends confirming the minimum vertical bore and intended upper service connection during the RFQ stage.
10. Can an API 6A Tree Cap include a pressure gauge port, bleeder port or vent connection?
Yes. SGPE can manufacture API 6A Tree Caps with Pressure Gauge Ports, Bleeder Ports or Pressure Monitoring Connections when the approved design requires them.
A pressure-gauge port can support production pressure monitoring, shut-in pressure checks, natural gas well monitoring, water-injection monitoring, gas-injection monitoring and well-testing preparation.
A separate bleeder or vent connection can also support controlled pressure handling in the upper-tree arrangement.
For quotation, specify the required port size, thread type, working pressure and sealing arrangement. SGPE then incorporates the connection into the technical review and manufacturing drawing.
11. Can SGPE manufacture a custom Tree Cap for obsolete or discontinued Christmas Tree equipment?
Yes. Custom replacement work forms an important part of SGPE’s API 6A Tree Cap supply scope.
Operators often need a Custom API 6A Tree Cap, Replacement Christmas Tree Cap or Replacement Top Connector because corrosion damages the original component, sealing surfaces wear, threads fail, or the OEM stops supporting an older Christmas Tree.
SGPE can develop a replacement design from an original drawing, Tree Cap nameplate, OEM model, part number, Swab Valve connection, RTJ groove and verified field dimensions.
If the original documentation no longer exists, send clear photographs of the complete Tree Cap, nameplate, lower connection, sealing surface and upper arrangement. These references help identify which measurements still need confirmation.
This approach works particularly well for brownfield wellhead replacement, mature-field MRO and Christmas Tree refurbishment.
12. What information do I need to get an API 6A Tree Cap price and quotation?
For an initial API 6A Tree Cap price and quotation, provide the quantity, nominal size, rated working pressure, vertical bore and mating connection.
For a more accurate technical and commercial offer, also provide the RTJ groove, Material Class, Temperature Class, body-material requirement, service fluid, H2S, CO2, gauge or bleeder port and upper arrangement.
If your project requires NDE, hydrostatic testing, PMI, TPI, ITP, MTR/MTC, COC or MDR documentation, include those requirements in the RFQ because they can affect both manufacturing scope and Tree Cap price.
For a replacement project, add the original drawing, nameplate, OEM or part number, Swab Valve connection, verified dimensions and field photographs.
If you do not have a complete datasheet, start with:
Size + Working Pressure + Swab Valve Connection + Nameplate + Clear Photographs + Quantity
SGPE can review these details first and identify the remaining information needed for a project-specific API 6A Tree Cap quotation.
