2. How do I choose the correct manual tong size for drill pipe?

Select a drill pipe tong from the actual tool joint OD rather than the nominal drill pipe body size. Two pipes with the same nominal diameter may use different tool joints, connections and torque values.

Type B and Type AAX tongs often suit standard drill pipe. Type DB, H and SDD models cover larger tool joints or higher-torque connections.

Share the drill pipe size, tool joint OD, connection, makeup torque and expected breakout torque so SGPE can match the correct model and jaw package.

3. What is the difference between Type B and Type DB Manual Tongs?

Type B Manual Tongs serve general drill pipe, casing coupling and drilling sub connections. They offer a practical range for conventional drilling and workover operations.

Type DB models provide a larger gripping range and higher torque capacity. Contractors often use them for heavy drill pipe, drill collars, larger casing couplings and selected BHA components.

The installed jaw and gripping diameter still determine the final torque limit. For that reason, buyers should compare the complete configuration rather than the model name alone.

4. Which manual tong suits tubing and workover operations?

Type MS, LF and C Manual Tongs commonly suit production tubing, completion work and light workover service.

Type MS and LF models cover smaller diameters and lower torque requirements. Type C offers a wider gripping range for tubing, small drill pipe, light casing and selected service tools.

Confirm the tubing body OD, coupling OD, thread type, makeup torque and available floor space. In many cases, the coupling OD determines the required jaw.

5. Can SGPE supply a manual tong for casing and conductor pipe?

6. Can one API 7K Manual Tong handle several tubular sizes?

One tong body can often handle several diameters by using different lug jaws, latch jaws, hinge jaws and tong dies.

However, one jaw set cannot cover the complete model range. Some size changes also require different pins, latch hardware or hinge positions. Larger jaws may also carry lower torque limits.

7. Why is the actual gripping OD more important than the nominal pipe size?

A manual tong often grips a tool joint or coupling rather than the tubular body. These sections usually have a larger outside diameter.

For example, a 5-inch drill pipe may use a much larger tool joint. Tubing and casing couplings also exceed the pipe body OD.

Measure the exact gripping surface and identify whether it is a tool joint, coupling, drill collar or pipe body. This information helps prevent jaw fitment errors.

8. How do lever length, line pull and pull angle affect torque?

A manual tong converts line pull into torque through its lever. A longer lever can reduce the pull force required for a given theoretical torque, but it also needs more floor clearance.

The highest theoretical torque occurs when the pull line remains perpendicular to the lever. As the angle changes, the effective torque decreases.

An extended lever does not raise the rated capacity of the tong body, jaw, hanger or suspension system.

10. What is the difference between a manual tong, hydraulic power tong and iron roughneck?

A manual tong uses a catline or mechanical pull line. Its straightforward structure suits conventional rigs, occasional use and backup service.

A hydraulic power tong uses a hydraulic motor and gearbox. It operates faster during repetitive tubing or casing running.

An iron roughneck combines clamping, spinning and torquing in one powered system. It suits high-volume drill pipe handling but requires more floor space and technical support.

11. Does every API 7K Manual Tong carry an API Monogram?

No. API Spec 7K includes manual tongs, but the product name does not confirm API Monogram marking.

Monogram eligibility depends on the selected product, manufacturing source and active licence scope. State the required API marking in both the RFQ and purchase order.
