Description

API 8C Rotary Swivel for Oilfield Kelly-Drive Rigs | SL135-SL450 for Land, Offshore & Deep-Well Drilling

SGPE manufactures and supplies API 8C Rotary Swivels for conventional oil and gas drilling rigs using rotary table and Kelly-drive systems. The equipment is also commonly known as an oilfield rotary swivel, drilling swivel, rotary drilling swivel, drilling rig swivel, Kelly swivel, Kelly drive swivel or rotary table swivel.

Installed between the drilling hook and Kelly, the swivel supports the suspended Kelly and drill-string load while allowing the drilling assembly below the hook to rotate. At the same time, the gooseneck, washpipe and hollow swivel stem provide a continuous high-pressure passage for drilling fluid from the rotary hose into the drill string.

SGPE supplies common SL135, SL170, SL225, SL315 and SL450 rotary swivels, covering typical maximum static load ratings from approximately 150 to 500 US tons. Common configurations support drilling-fluid pressures up to approximately 35 MPa / 5,000 psi and rotary speeds up to approximately 300 rpm, depending on the selected model and approved project specification.

Typical applications include oil exploration, natural gas drilling, field development, deep-well drilling, heavy drill-string programs, high-pressure mud circulation, conventional directional drilling, land-rig refurbishment and selected offshore replacement projects.

For maintenance and overhaul, SGPE also supplies rotary swivel washpipes, washpipe packing sets, packing assemblies, main bearings, swivel stems, goosenecks, bails, lower subs, seals and other drilling swivel spare parts.

For a new rig project, provide the rig model, hook capacity, required load, mud pressure, maximum rpm and connection details. For a replacement rotary swivel, the existing manufacturer, model, nameplate, GA drawing and verified dimensions provide the best basis for technical matching.

Product Overview

An API 8C rotary swivel performs two essential functions on a conventional drilling rig. It supports the suspended drill string while also providing a pressure-containing passage for circulating drilling fluid.

The drilling hook carries the swivel through its bail. The swivel stem connects downward to the Kelly, while the gooseneck connects to the rotary drilling hose.

During drilling, the rotary table turns the Kelly and drill string. The main bearing allows the stem and drilling assembly below the swivel to rotate while the upper body remains suspended from the hook.

Meanwhile, drilling fluid moves from the mud pumps through the standpipe and rotary hose. It enters the swivel through the gooseneck, passes through the washpipe and hollow stem, and continues through the Kelly into the drill string.

A heavy-duty drilling swivel therefore has to manage three demanding conditions at the same time:

Heavy Drill-String Load + Continuous Rotation + High-Pressure Mud Circulation

This makes the swivel an important interface between the rig’s hoisting, rotary and drilling-fluid circulation systems.

For replacement work, nominal tonnage alone does not prove interchangeability. Static and dynamic loads, stem bore, bail geometry, gooseneck connection, rotary hose interface, Kelly connection and available installation space also need to match.

For this reason, SGPE approaches a replacement drilling swivel as a rig-interface matching project, rather than simply choosing another unit with the same nominal load rating.

These values provide a useful reference for model comparison, transportation planning and preliminary replacement review.

Different manufacturers and design generations can still use different bail geometry, stem length, lower connections or overall dimensions. Final replacement compatibility should therefore be checked against the existing rig and approved drawing.

Rotary Swivel with Kelly Spinner

Some conventional drilling rigs use a rotary swivel with Kelly spinner, also called a drilling swivel with spinner or double-duty swivel.

Base Swivel Spinner Reference Reference Assembly Size
SL135 XSL135 Approx. 2326 × 660 × 780 mm
SL170 XSL170 Approx. 2490 × 820 × 822 mm
SL225 XSL225 Approx. 2743 × 1010 × 957 mm
SL315 XSL315 Approx. 2873 × 1026 × 897 mm
SL450 XSL450 Approx. 3025 × 1096 × 1012 mm

Depending on the design, the spinner may use pneumatic or hydraulic drive.

Because a spinner changes the overall assembly and installation envelope, the drive system, rig layout and available clearance should be reviewed before the final configuration is confirmed.

SL135-SL450 Drilling Swivel Model Range

SL135 Rotary Swivel – 150 Ton

The SL135 rotary swivel provides a typical maximum static load of approximately 1350 kN / 150 US tons and dynamic load around 1000 kN / 110 US tons.

Common configurations use a 64 mm / 2.52 in stem bore, 4 LP gooseneck connection and 6-5/8 REG-LH lower connection.

The SL135 can suit smaller and medium-capacity land rigs, oil and gas exploration wells, development drilling and replacement of existing 150-ton swivels.

For an SL135 drilling swivel quotation, confirm the hook load, working pressure, bail dimensions and lower connection.

SL170 Rotary Swivel – 200 Ton

The SL170 rotary swivel provides a typical maximum static load of approximately 1700 kN / 200 US tons and dynamic load around 1300 kN / 140 US tons.

It fills the capacity range between the SL135 and SL225 and can suit medium-capacity drilling rigs, natural gas wells, development programs and mature Kelly-drive rig refurbishment.

For an SL170 drilling swivel price or replacement proposal, provide the existing rig model, hook capacity, working pressure, connection details and installation dimensions.

SL225 Rotary Swivel – 250 Ton

The SL225 rotary swivel provides a typical maximum static load of approximately 2250 kN / 250 US tons and dynamic load around 1600 kN / 175 US tons.

Its common 75 mm / 3.00 in stem bore provides a larger drilling-fluid passage than typical SL135 and SL170 configurations.

Typical applications include oil exploration, natural gas drilling, appraisal wells, field development, vertical drilling, compatible directional drilling and mature rig refurbishment.

Customers requesting an SL225 Rotary Swivel Price, 250 Ton Drilling Swivel Quote or Replacement SL225 Swivel can provide existing rig data for interface review.

Washpipes, packing sets, bearings, seals and other SL225 overhaul components can also be supplied separately.

SL315 Rotary Swivel – 350 Ton

The SL315 rotary swivel supports heavier conventional drilling rigs with a typical maximum static load of approximately 3150 kN / 350 US tons and dynamic load around 2100 kN / 230 US tons.

It can suit deep-well and higher-hook-load programs when the complete drilling system matches its operating limits.

For an SL315 350 Ton Rotary Swivel quotation, working pressure, stem bore, bail geometry, gooseneck connection, Kelly connection and installation space should also be reviewed.

SL450 Rotary Swivel – 500 Ton

The SL450 rotary swivel provides a typical maximum static load of approximately 4500 kN / 500 US tons and dynamic load around 3200 kN / 350 US tons.

This heavy-duty 500 Ton Drilling Swivel can serve high-capacity conventional rigs operating with heavy drill strings and demanding drilling-fluid circulation.

Typical applications include deep oil wells, deep gas wells, high-hook-load land rigs, heavy drill-string programs, 5,000 psi mud circulation and selected offshore refurbishment projects.

For an SL450 Rotary Swivel Price, 500 Ton 5000 PSI Drilling Swivel or Replacement SL450 Swivel, the load rating, stem bore, bail geometry, rotary hose interface, lower connection and installation dimensions should all be confirmed before quotation.

How a Drilling Rig Rotary Swivel Works

A conventional Kelly-drive drilling system normally follows this equipment sequence:

Traveling Block → Drilling Hook → Rotary Swivel → Kelly → Kelly Bushing → Rotary Table → Drill String → Drill Bit

The hook suspends the swivel through its bail. The Kelly connects below the swivel stem, while the rotary drilling hose connects to the gooseneck.

When the rotary table turns, the Kelly and drill string rotate below the swivel.

At the same time, drilling fluid follows this path:

Mud Pump → Standpipe → Rotary Hose → Gooseneck → Washpipe → Swivel Stem → Kelly → Drill String → Drill Bit

After leaving the bit nozzles, drilling fluid returns through the annulus and carries cuttings toward the surface.

A drilling rig rotary swivel therefore needs sufficient load capacity, reliable bearing performance and dependable high-pressure sealing throughout drilling operations.

Rotary Swivel for Oil Exploration and Field Development

Exploration and field-development programs often involve different well depths, formations and drill-string configurations.

A correctly selected oilfield rotary swivel carries the suspended load while maintaining continuous drilling-fluid circulation.

For multi-well programs, standardizing compatible SL Series swivels can simplify spare-parts stocking, washpipe and packing replacement, maintenance planning and repeat procurement.

Rotary Swivel for Deep Wells and Heavy Drill Strings

Deeper wells increase drill-string weight and place greater demand on the hoisting system.

Higher-capacity configurations such as the SL315 350 Ton Rotary Swivel and SL450 500 Ton Rotary Swivel can support demanding drilling programs when the complete rig matches their ratings.

Well depth alone should not determine the swivel model. Hook load, dynamic load, mud pressure, rpm, bore, connections and installation dimensions should be considered together.

5000 PSI High Pressure Rotary Swivel

Common SL Series configurations can support drilling-fluid pressure up to approximately 35 MPa / 5,000 psi.

Depending on the purchaser’s terminology, the same requirement may appear as a 5000 PSI Rotary Swivel, 5K Drilling Swivel, High Pressure Drilling Swivel, 5000 PSI Oilfield Swivel or 500 Ton 5000 PSI Rotary Swivel.

The pressure-containing path includes the gooseneck, washpipe, packing assembly, swivel stem and related connections.

The working pressure should therefore be reviewed together with the rotary hose rating, stem bore, drilling-fluid type and sealing arrangement.

Rotary Swivel for WBM, OBM and SBM

The load-bearing structure supports the drill string, while the washpipe, packing and seals contact the circulating drilling fluid.

Depending on the well program, the rig may operate with Water-Based Mud (WBM), Oil-Based Mud (OBM) or Synthetic-Based Mud (SBM).

Because mud chemistry and operating temperature can affect seal and packing performance, the actual drilling-fluid system should be identified during technical review.

Land Rig, Offshore and Harsh-Environment Applications

Operating environment can influence more than the nominal swivel rating.

Desert land rigs may require closer review of high ambient temperature, dust exposure, lubrication and preservation. Cold-region drilling can require additional consideration of seals, lubricants and low-temperature material performance.

Offshore refurbishment projects may also require more extensive material traceability, NDE, third-party inspection, preservation and project documentation.

Replacement Rotary Swivel for Existing and Legacy Drilling Rigs

Replacement is a common requirement for mature drilling rigs, especially when the original swivel is obsolete, damaged or no longer supported.

The rig owner may have an old GA drawing, a nameplate, a maintenance record or only the existing physical swivel available for comparison.

SGPE can review Replacement Rotary Swivels, Replacement Kelly Swivels, Legacy Drilling Swivels, OEM Replacement Swivels and Replacement SL Series Swivels using available field information.

Replacement Data Why It Matters Priority
Existing Swivel Model Identifies original design family Very High
Original Manufacturer Helps compare design differences High
Rig Manufacturer / Model Confirms rig configuration Very High
Hook Capacity Confirms hoisting requirement Very High
Static Load Defines primary load rating Very High
Dynamic Load Defines operating load Very High
Mud Pressure Defines pressure requirement Very High
Maximum RPM Defines rotary duty High
Stem Bore Confirms flow passage High
Gooseneck Connection Confirms rotary hose interface Very High
Kelly Connection Confirms lower interface Very High
Bail Dimensions Confirms hook fit Very High
Overall Dimensions Confirms installation envelope Very High
Nameplate Confirms model and ratings Very High
GA Drawing Provides dimensional reference Very High

During replacement review, three interfaces deserve particular attention:

Drilling Hook → Rotary Swivel

Rotary Hose → Gooseneck

Rotary Swivel → Kelly

Checking these interfaces before manufacturing helps reduce unexpected field modification, installation delays and avoidable rig downtime.

Why Same-Tonnage Rotary Swivels May Not Be Interchangeable

Two 250-ton, 350-ton or 500-ton swivels can share the same nominal rating and still have different physical interfaces.

Differences may include bail geometry, overall height, stem length, gooseneck thread, Kelly connection, washpipe arrangement, packing design or spinner interface.

A Replacement SL225, SL315 or SL450 Rotary Swivel should therefore not be selected from tonnage alone.

Where possible, provide the original GA drawing and nameplate. If these are unavailable, clear equipment photographs and verified field measurements provide a practical starting point for replacement engineering.

Rotary Swivel Components and Spare Parts

Rotary Swivel Washpipe and Packing

The rotary swivel washpipe and packing assembly operates between the relatively stationary upper mud passage and the rotating stem.

This area experiences drilling-fluid pressure, continuous rotation, abrasive solids and sealing friction. As a result, the washpipe and packing are among the most frequently serviced parts of a drilling swivel.

Common procurement descriptions include Drilling Swivel Washpipe, Rotary Swivel Washpipe Packing, Washpipe Packing Set, Rotary Swivel Packing Assembly, Swivel Seal Kit and Washpipe Repair Kit.

A worn packing set can cause mud leakage, while a damaged washpipe sealing surface can accelerate packing wear.

The correct replacement parts can be identified from the swivel model, part number, drawing or existing component dimensions.

Common Rotary Swivel Spare Parts

Spare Part Main Function Typical Requirement
Washpipe Transfers drilling fluid Wear / overhaul
Washpipe Packing Set Pressure sealing Leakage / maintenance
Packing Assembly High-pressure sealing Repair
Packing Box Supports packing components Overhaul
Main Bearing Carries axial load Major overhaul

SGPE can supply individual components or complete rotary swivel spare-parts packages for overhaul, preventive maintenance and rig-fleet stocking.

For an urgent Drilling Swivel Spare Parts quotation, provide the swivel model, part number, drawing and clear photographs.

Rotary Swivel vs Power Swivel vs Top Drive

Feature Rotary Swivel Power Swivel Top Drive
Supports Suspended Load Yes Yes Yes
Provides Mud Passage Yes Yes Yes
Provides Powered Rotation No Yes Yes
Rotation Source Rotary Table + Kelly Hydraulic / Electric Drive Integrated Drive
Kelly Normally Used Yes Often No No
Typical Application Conventional Drilling Rig Drilling / Workover Modern Drilling Rig

A conventional rotary swivel carries drilling load and provides the drilling-fluid passage, but it normally does not generate drilling torque. The rotary table turns the Kelly and drill string.

A power swivel includes its own hydraulic or electric drive, while a top drive provides powered rotation and drilling-fluid circulation as part of a traveling drilling system.

This distinction matters when comparing a Rotary Swivel vs Power Swivel, Kelly Swivel vs Power Swivel or Drilling Swivel vs Top Drive.

API Spec 8C, PSL and Project Requirements

API Spec 8C covers drilling and production hoisting equipment, including rotary swivels.

For a project RFQ, the purchaser should identify the applicable API 8C edition, Product Specification Level and any supplementary technical or quality requirements.

The project specification may also define material traceability, NDE, pressure testing, inspection hold points, witness points, third-party inspection, product marking and documentation.

Where API Monogram marking is specifically required, this requirement should be stated clearly in the RFQ and purchase order.

SGPE confirms the applicable manufacturing, compliance, marking and documentation scope before order placement rather than applying the same certification statement to every configuration.

API 8C Rotary Swivel Price and Quotation

Buyers sourcing an API 8C Rotary Swivel Manufacturer, Oilfield Rotary Swivel Supplier, Drilling Swivel Supplier, Rotary Swivel Price, 500 Ton Drilling Swivel Price or Replacement Drilling Swivel Quote usually need more than a model number to receive an accurate proposal.

The quotation depends on the selected model, static and dynamic loads, mud pressure, maximum rpm, stem bore, gooseneck connection, Kelly connection and bail dimensions.

The final supply scope may also depend on the Kelly spinner, project materials, drilling-fluid compatibility, API/PSL requirements, NDE, TPI, documentation and spare-parts package.

Commercial factors such as quantity, required delivery schedule, destination and Incoterm also influence the final quotation.

For example, an SL450 500 Ton Rotary Swivel differs substantially from an SL135 in size, weight and load-bearing configuration. A cross-manufacturer replacement project may also require additional dimensional and interface review before the final price can be confirmed.

For faster quotation, provide the rig specification, existing swivel data, quantity, destination and required delivery date with the inquiry.

Frequently Asked Questions About API 8C Rotary Swivels

1. What is an API 8C Rotary Swivel and how does it work on a drilling rig?

An API 8C Rotary Swivel serves as both a load-bearing component and a drilling-fluid passage on conventional oil and gas drilling rigs with rotary table and Kelly-drive systems. The drilling hook supports the swivel through its bail, while the Kelly connects below the swivel stem.

During drilling, the rotary table turns the Kelly and drill string below the swivel. At the same time, drilling fluid flows from the rotary hose through the gooseneck, washpipe and hollow stem into the drill string. This arrangement allows the swivel to carry substantial suspended load while maintaining continuous mud circulation.

The industry also commonly refers to this equipment as an Oilfield Rotary Swivel, Drilling Swivel, Kelly Swivel, Kelly Drive Swivel or Drilling Rig Swivel.

2. Which SL Series API 8C Rotary Swivel models does SGPE supply?

SGPE supplies common SL135, SL170, SL225, SL315 and SL450 Rotary Swivels, covering typical maximum static load classes from approximately 150 to 500 US tons.

The SL135 and SL170 suit smaller and medium-capacity conventional drilling rigs, while the SL225 provides a common 250-ton option for exploration and field-development drilling. Higher-capacity SL315 and SL450 models can support deeper wells, heavier drill strings and higher hook loads when the overall rig configuration matches their operating limits.

SGPE can support new drilling-rig projects, replacement swivels, rig refurbishment and spare-parts requirements across these model ranges.

3. Can an API 8C Rotary Swivel operate at 5,000 psi and 300 rpm?

Common SL Series configurations can handle drilling-fluid pressures up to approximately 35 MPa / 5,000 psi and rotary speeds up to approximately 300 rpm, depending on the selected model and approved project specification.

However, pressure and rpm alone do not determine suitability. The technical review should also consider hook load, static and dynamic load ratings, stem bore, rotary hose rating, gooseneck connection, washpipe condition, packing system and drilling-fluid properties.

For high-pressure mud circulation, deep-well drilling and heavy-duty land-rig applications, SGPE reviews the complete operating conditions before confirming the swivel configuration.

4. How do I choose between SL135, SL170, SL225, SL315 and SL450 Rotary Swivels?

Start with the required static and dynamic loads, then review mud pressure, maximum rpm, stem bore, bail geometry, gooseneck connection, Kelly connection, rotary hose interface and available installation space.

For example, an SL450 500 Ton Rotary Swivel provides a higher load capacity than an SL225, but it also has different dimensions, weight and interface requirements. A larger swivel does not automatically provide better compatibility.

For new rigs, the rig model and hook capacity provide a useful starting point. For replacement projects, the existing swivel nameplate, GA drawing and verified field dimensions help SGPE match the new unit more accurately.

5. What is the difference between 150 Ton, 250 Ton, 350 Ton and 500 Ton Drilling Swivels?

The main difference lies in load capacity. Typical examples include the SL135 in the 150-ton class, SL225 at 250 ton, SL315 at 350 ton and SL450 at 500 ton.

These models can also differ in dynamic load rating, stem bore, overall dimensions, weight and connection geometry. A 500 Ton Drilling Swivel can suit deep wells and heavy drill-string programs, while lower-capacity models often fit smaller conventional land rigs and medium-depth drilling operations.

The final selection should balance load capacity with actual rig interfaces and operating conditions.

6. What stem bore and connections are commonly used on SL Series Rotary Swivels?

Common SL135 and SL170 configurations use an approximately 64 mm / 2.52 in stem bore, while SL225, SL315 and SL450 models commonly use approximately 75 mm / 3.00 in.

Typical configurations may use a 4 LP gooseneck connection and a 6-5/8 REG-LH lower connection. However, manufacturers and design generations can use different connection details, stem lengths and interface dimensions.

SGPE therefore recommends checking the approved GA drawing, gooseneck connection, Kelly connection and stem dimensions before manufacturing a new swivel or replacing an existing unit.

7. Can API 8C Rotary Swivels handle WBM, OBM and SBM drilling fluids?

Yes. SGPE can review rotary swivel configurations for Water-Based Mud (WBM), Oil-Based Mud (OBM) and Synthetic-Based Mud (SBM) service.

The swivel body and load-bearing structure carry the mechanical load, while the washpipe, packing assembly and seals remain in direct contact with the circulating drilling fluid. Mud chemistry, solids content, temperature and operating pressure can affect packing performance and seal life.

For OBM, SBM or high-temperature drilling, customers should provide the drilling-fluid information during the RFQ stage so SGPE can review the sealing and packing arrangement for the intended service.

8. Can SGPE supply a Replacement Rotary Swivel for an obsolete or discontinued rig?

Yes. SGPE supports Replacement Rotary Swivels, Replacement Kelly Swivels, Legacy Drilling Swivels and Replacement SL Series Swivels for mature rigs where the original equipment has become obsolete, damaged or difficult to source.

For technical matching, SGPE reviews the original manufacturer, swivel model, rig model, hook capacity, mud pressure, maximum rpm, stem bore, bail dimensions, gooseneck connection, Kelly connection, nameplate and GA drawing.

Two 250-ton, 350-ton or 500-ton swivels may share the same nominal rating but still use different physical interfaces. For this reason, SGPE matches replacement equipment against actual rig dimensions and connection data instead of relying on tonnage alone.

9. What Rotary Swivel spare parts can SGPE supply for maintenance and overhaul?

SGPE supplies common Rotary Swivel Spare Parts for preventive maintenance, routine repair and major overhaul. Typical parts include washpipes, washpipe packing sets, packing assemblies, packing boxes, main bearings, bearing components, swivel stems, goosenecks, bails, lower subs, oil seals, O-rings and gaskets.

The Rotary Swivel Washpipe and Packing Assembly require particular attention because they work under drilling-fluid pressure and continuous rotation. Worn packing can cause mud leakage, while damage to the washpipe sealing surface can accelerate packing wear and reduce sealing performance.

For accurate parts identification, customers can send the swivel model, part number, existing drawing, component dimensions or clear photographs. SGPE can then recommend individual replacement parts or a complete drilling swivel spare-parts package.

10. What is the difference between a Rotary Swivel, Power Swivel and Top Drive?

A conventional Rotary Swivel carries the drill-string load and provides a drilling-fluid passage, but it normally does not generate drilling torque. The rotary table drives the Kelly and drill string below the swivel.

A Power Swivel uses its own hydraulic or electric drive to generate rotation, while a Top Drive combines powered rotation and drilling-fluid circulation in a traveling drilling system.

This distinction matters when selecting equipment for land drilling, workover or rig modernization. An API 8C Rotary Swivel best suits conventional rigs that still operate with a rotary table and Kelly-drive system.

11. Can an API 8C Rotary Swivel work on offshore, deep-well and harsh-environment drilling projects?

Yes, provided the rig uses a compatible rotary-table and Kelly-drive arrangement.

SGPE can review API 8C Rotary Swivels for deep oil wells, natural gas wells, heavy drill-string programs, fixed offshore platforms, jack-up rig refurbishment, desert drilling and cold-region drilling.

Deep-well programs may require higher-capacity models such as the SL315 or SL450. Offshore and harsh-environment projects may also require additional attention to NDE, material traceability, preservation, seal selection, lubrication, third-party inspection and project documentation.

SGPE reviews both the operating environment and the rig interface before confirming the final configuration.

12. How can I get an API 8C Rotary Swivel price or quotation from SGPE?

For an accurate API 8C Rotary Swivel price or quotation, provide the required model, drilling-rig manufacturer and model, hook capacity, static and dynamic load requirements, mud pressure, maximum rpm, stem bore, gooseneck connection, Kelly connection and quantity.

For a Replacement Rotary Swivel, also provide the existing manufacturer, swivel model, nameplate, GA drawing and verified interface dimensions whenever available.

If your project requires API/PSL documentation, NDE, TPI, ITP, MDR, spare parts or special inspection, include those requirements in the same RFQ. SGPE will review the drilling-rig data and project scope and then provide a suitable technical proposal and corresponding commercial quotation.
