16–17 in 406.4–431.8 mm Approx. 80 kN·m

This high-torque manual casing tong suits higher torque requirements and demanding workover or casing breakout applications.

For premium casing connections, always follow the connection manufacturer’s approved running procedure and torque-control requirements. Use a manual tong only where the approved connection procedure permits it.

For common requirements such as a manual tong for 9-5/8 in casing or a 13-3/8 in casing manual tong, SGPE checks the makeup and breakout torque against the exact SDD configuration before recommending a model.

Extended Casing Tong for Large-Diameter Casing

When Type B, DB or SDD tongs cannot cover the required OD, an Extended Casing Tong provides the wider gripping range needed for large surface casing and conductor casing.

These large-diameter manual casing tongs use different hinge-jaw combinations and typically cover approximately 13-3/8 to 36 in.

Extended Casing Tong Capacity

Capacity Group Approx. Range Metric Range Rated Torque
35 kN·m Class Approx. 13-3/8–30 in Approx. 340–762 mm 35 kN·m
55 kN·m Class Approx. 25-1/2–36 in Approx. 648–914.4 mm 55 kN·m

The ranges overlap because different tong bodies and hinge-jaw arrangements can cover some of the same diameters.

Use this table as an initial guide. Actual gripping OD and required torque always take priority over nominal casing size.

How Does a Casing Manual Tong Work?

A manual casing tong converts mechanical line pull into torque around a threaded casing connection.

The tong body surrounds the casing or coupling. The jaw and die system grips the tubular surface, while force applied to the tong arm creates rotational torque.

During makeup, the tong turns the connection in the tightening direction. During breakout, the direction reverses to loosen the joint.

Available torque depends on the line pull, tong arm length, gripping diameter, jaw arrangement, latch position and tong geometry. Correct jaw selection therefore affects both gripping range and torque capacity.

Interchangeable Jaws for Multi-Size Casing Programs

A single well often uses several casing diameters.

For example, a casing program may include 5-1/2 in or 7 in production casing, 9-5/8 in intermediate casing and 13-3/8 in surface casing.

Compatible manual tongs can use different latch lug jaws, hinge jaws, latch positions and tong dies. This allows one tong body to cover several sizes where the configuration permits.

For a multi-size casing program, send the complete size schedule so SGPE can check the required tong body and jaw sets.

Casing Tong Dies and Gripping Inserts

Casing tong dies provide the gripping contact between the tong jaw and the casing body or coupling.

Because the dies work under concentrated mechanical load, regular inspection helps maintain reliable grip and reduce slippage.

Inspection Item Check For
Teeth Rounded, broken or flattened teeth
Surface Cracks or abnormal wear
Fit Excessive movement inside the jaw
Wear Pattern Uneven gripping contact
Grip Slippage during operation
Corrosion Heavy rust or pitting

SGPE can supply casing tong dies, manual tong inserts, jaw inserts, latch lug jaws and hinge-jaw gripping components for both new equipment and replacement requirements.

For replacement dies or inserts, provide the tong model, jaw number, casing size, dimensions, quantity and clear photos.

Oilfield Applications

Casing Running and Well Construction

Casing running is the main application for a manual casing makeup tong.

During well construction, the tool can support connection makeup and breakout for production casing, intermediate casing, surface casing and conductor casing.

A tong may fit the casing diameter but still be unsuitable if its torque rating does not meet the connection requirement. Both OD and torque must therefore be checked before operation.

Production and Intermediate Casing

Type B, DB and SDD manual tongs cover many common production and intermediate casing sizes, including 4-1/2 in, 5 in, 5-1/2 in, 7 in, 7-5/8 in, 8-5/8 in, 9-5/8 in, 10-3/4 in, 11-3/4 in and 13-3/8 in.

Type B and DB suit many conventional casing programs. Type SDD provides additional torque capacity where required.

Surface and Conductor Casing

Common surface casing sizes include 13-3/8 in, 16 in, 18-5/8 in and 20 in.

For larger tubulars, Extended Casing Tongs cover 20 in, 24 in, 30 in and selected conductor casing up to approximately 36 in.

Land and Offshore Drilling

Manual casing tongs can support casing operations on conventional land rigs, remote exploration rigs, development rigs and mobile drilling units.

They can also work on jack-up rigs, fixed offshore platforms, offshore drilling units and workover installations.

Offshore projects may require additional corrosion protection, coating, material traceability, inspection documentation and export packing.

Workover, Casing Recovery and Well Servicing

A workover manual tong or manual casing breakout tong can support casing breakout, casing pulling, casing recovery, repair, replacement and well servicing.

For existing connections, breakout torque needs particular attention. Corrosion, thread condition, mechanical loading and long service can increase the torque required to release a joint.

Backup for Hydraulic Casing Power Tongs

Many drilling contractors keep a manual casing tong on the rig even when a hydraulic casing power tong handles normal casing-running operations.

If the hydraulic motor, hose, control valve, power unit or powered jaw system requires maintenance, a compatible manual tong can provide backup for connections within its rated range.

This is particularly useful on remote land rigs and offshore installations where equipment downtime can affect the drilling or workover schedule.

Casing Manual Tong vs Hydraulic Casing Power Tong

Comparison Casing Manual Tong Hydraulic Casing Power Tong
Drive Mechanical line pull Hydraulic motor
Hydraulic Power Unit Not required for tong drive Normally required
Operating Speed Lower Higher
Mechanical Complexity Lower Higher
Field Maintenance Relatively simple Hydraulic service required
High-Volume Casing Running Less suitable Better suited
Backup Use Well suited Normally primary equipment
Remote Rig Use Practical Requires hydraulic support
Torque Control Depends on line pull and geometry Hydraulic torque control available
Typical Role Manual primary / backup tool Primary powered tong

A manual casing tong does not replace a hydraulic power tong in every operation. Its main advantages are mechanical simplicity, field serviceability and backup capability.

State the required standard, inspection and documentation scope clearly in the RFQ so SGPE can confirm the available supply scope before order placement.

How to Select the Right Casing Manual Tong

Selecting a manual tong from nominal casing size alone can result in the wrong jaw range or insufficient torque capacity.

Selection Data Why It Matters
Casing OD Defines the basic gripping diameter
Coupling OD May exceed casing body OD
Connection Type Influences torque requirement
Makeup Torque Determines minimum tong capacity
Breakout Torque Critical for workover and recovery
Complete Casing Program Determines required jaw sets
Rig Type Land / offshore / workover
Main Application Running / makeup / breakout / backup
API Requirement Defines technical scope
Documentation Defines project deliverables
Quantity Defines supply scope
Destination Defines packing and logistics

For projects with several casing sizes, send the complete casing schedule. SGPE can then check whether one tong with multiple jaw sets can cover the job or whether more than one tong family is required.

Frequently Asked Questions About Casing Manual Tongs

1. What is a Casing Manual Tong?

A Casing Manual Tong is a mechanical oilfield tool used to grip casing, casing joints or casing couplings and apply torque during threaded connection makeup and breakout.

Unlike a hydraulic casing power tong, it uses mechanical line pull instead of a hydraulic motor. Drilling and workover crews commonly use manual casing tongs during casing running, well construction, casing recovery and well servicing on land and offshore rigs.

2. What casing sizes can a Casing Manual Tong handle?

The available size range depends on the tong body, jaw configuration and latch position. Across SGPE Type B, Type DB, Type SDD and Extended Casing Tong configurations, the complete product family covers approximately 3-3/8 to 36 in.

Smaller models suit production and intermediate casing, while extended manual casing tongs can handle large surface and conductor casing. Always confirm the actual casing or coupling OD before selecting a tong.

3. What is the difference between Type B, Type DB and Type SDD Manual Tongs?

The main differences are gripping range, jaw configuration and torque capacity. The Type B / HT 55 Manual Tong covers many standard casing sizes, while the Type DB / HT 65 Manual Tong extends the working range to approximately 17 in.

The Type SDD / HT 100 Manual Tong provides higher torque for demanding casing makeup and breakout, with selected configurations rated up to approximately 135 kN·m / 100,000 lb-ft. Large surface and conductor casing may require an Extended Casing Tong.

4. Which manual tong can handle 9-5/8 in or 13-3/8 in casing?

Several Type B, DB and SDD configurations can handle 9-5/8 in casing, making these models suitable for many production and intermediate casing programs. For 13-3/8 in casing, selected Type B, DB, SDD and Extended configurations may be suitable depending on the actual gripping diameter and torque requirement.

Because casing coupling OD can exceed the nominal pipe OD, SGPE checks both size and required makeup or breakout torque before recommending the final configuration.

5. Do you supply a manual tong for 20 inch or large-diameter casing?

Yes. A 20 inch casing manual tong normally falls within the Extended Casing Tong family. Large-diameter manual casing tongs can support surface and conductor casing applications and, depending on the hinge-jaw configuration, can cover selected casing sizes up to approximately 36 in. Common requirements include 18-5/8 in, 20 in, 24 in and 30 in casing for surface or conductor strings.

6. What is the maximum torque of a Casing Manual Tong?

Maximum torque depends on the tong model, gripping diameter and jaw arrangement. Selected Type B configurations can reach approximately 75 kN·m, while Type DB configurations can reach approximately 90 kN·m over selected gripping ranges.

High-torque Type SDD models can reach approximately 135 kN·m / 100,000 lb-ft on selected configurations. The maximum rating does not apply across every casing diameter, so torque and gripping range must always be checked together.

7. Can one manual casing tong handle several casing sizes?

Yes. Many manual casing tong models use interchangeable latch lug jaws, hinge jaws, latch positions and replaceable tong dies to cover several casing sizes with one tong body.

This is useful for drilling programs that include production, intermediate and surface casing in different diameters. For correct selection, provide the complete casing schedule together with the casing OD and coupling OD so SGPE can determine the required jaw sets and tong configuration.

8. Can a Casing Manual Tong perform both makeup and breakout?

Yes. A correctly selected casing makeup and breakout tong can tighten new casing connections and loosen existing threaded joints. During drilling and casing running, the tong can support normal connection makeup, while workover and casing recovery operations often require breakout capability.

Breakout torque may exceed the original makeup torque because of corrosion, thread condition, mechanical loading or long service, so this value should be considered separately during selection.

9. What is the difference between a Casing Manual Tong and a Hydraulic Casing Power Tong?

A Casing Manual Tong uses mechanical line pull, while a Hydraulic Casing Power Tong uses a hydraulic motor and hydraulic power supply. Manual tongs offer simpler construction, easier field maintenance and useful backup capability, especially on remote land rigs or workover locations.

Hydraulic power tongs normally provide faster operation and more controlled powered makeup for intensive casing-running programs. Many drilling contractors therefore use a hydraulic power tong as the primary system and keep a manual tong as backup equipment.

10. Can SGPE supply a Casing Manual Tong for an API Spec 7K project?

Manual tongs fall within the equipment scope of API Spec 7K. However, buyers should clearly distinguish applicable API specification requirements from API Monogram requirements, manufacturer documentation and third-party inspection.

If your project requires an API Monogram, COC, MTC, inspection report, traceability records or independent inspection, state these requirements separately in the RFQ so SGPE can confirm the applicable technical and documentation scope before quotation and order placement.

11. Can I buy replacement Casing Manual Tong jaws, dies and spare parts?

Yes. SGPE can supply Casing Manual Tong spare parts such as latch lug jaws, hinge jaws, casing tong dies, inserts, hinge pins, tong-line pins, latch pins, springs and latch assemblies. Replacement parts can also be reviewed for HT 55, HT 65 and HT 100 manual tongs.

For existing equipment, provide the manufacturer, tong model, part number if available, jaw number, dimensions, casing size and clear photos so the replacement component can be identified more accurately.

12. How can I get a Casing Manual Tong price or quotation?

The Casing Manual Tong price depends on the selected model, casing size range, required torque, jaw sets, quantity, spare parts, inspection scope and documentation requirements. For an accurate quotation, provide the casing OD, coupling OD, connection type, makeup torque, breakout torque, complete casing program, quantity and delivery destination.

If you are unsure whether Type B, DB, SDD or an Extended Casing Tong is suitable, SGPE can review your operating requirements, recommend an appropriate configuration and then provide a corresponding commercial quotation.
