Description
Iron Roughneck for Drill Pipe Makeup & Breakout on Land, Offshore & Jack-Up Drilling
SGPE Iron Roughneck is an automatic hydraulic rig-floor machine for drill pipe and drill collar makeup and breakout in oil and gas drilling operations. It integrates pipe gripping, high-speed spinning, backup holding, torque application and powered positioning into one system for efficient drill-string connection work.
During makeup, the unit moves to the tool joint, grips the connection and spins the upper pipe through the thread-engagement stage. The torque wrench then applies final makeup torque while the backup section holds the lower component. During breakout, the wrench releases the connection before the spinner rotates the upper pipe out.
The equipment is suitable for land drilling rigs, offshore platforms, jack-up rigs, deep and ultra-deep wells, tripping, stand building, drill-string assembly, drill collar handling and selected BHA operations. It can also integrate with mechanized or automated rig-floor systems.
SGPE offers standard, small, compact, rail-mounted and ultra-deep well configurations for different rig layouts. Depending on the model, the range handles approximately 2-7/8 in. drill pipe to 9-3/4 in. drill collar, with maximum published performance of 140 kN·m makeup torque, 160 kN·m breakout torque, 5 kN·m spinning torque and 80 RPM on 5 in. drill pipe.
For projects requiring higher automation, selected SGPE Smart Wrench configurations can support machine-vision tool-joint recognition, deep-learning-assisted positioning and remote, wireless or centralized control.
SGPE can recommend a suitable Hydraulic Iron Roughneck, Automatic Iron Roughneck or Drill Pipe Makeup and Breakout Machine according to the drill-string program, hydraulic supply and rig-floor layout.

What Is an Iron Roughneck?
An Iron Roughneck is a powered drill-floor machine used to make up and break out threaded drill-string connections.
Traditional rig-floor connection work may use a pipe spinner, power tong or manual tong together with a separate backup tong. A hydraulic roughneck brings several of these functions together in one machine.
During drill pipe makeup, the unit approaches the tool joint and secures the upper and lower components. The spinner rotates the upper drill pipe until the connection reaches the final torque stage. The torque wrench then completes makeup while the backup wrench holds the lower tubular.
During breakout, the backup section holds the lower component while the torque system releases the threaded connection. The spinner then rotates the upper pipe out.
This combination of pipe spinning, torque wrenching, backup holding and powered positioning makes the machine well suited to frequent drill-string make-and-break work.
On a mechanized rig floor, it can operate alongside top drives, power slips, hydraulic catwalks, pipe racking systems, pipe handling equipment and centralized drilling controls.
The equipment can therefore form part of a wider oilfield tubular handling system, automatic drill pipe handling system or drilling rig automation package.
Hydraulic Iron Roughneck, Automatic Roughneck and Smart Wrench
Different drilling projects use different terms for this type of connection equipment.
A Hydraulic Iron Roughneck uses hydraulic power for gripping, spinning, torque application and machine movement. An Automatic Iron Roughneck places more emphasis on powered positioning and automated operating steps.
The term Drill Pipe Iron Roughneck describes the main tubular application, while Rig Floor Iron Roughneck describes where the equipment works within the drilling system.
SGPE also offers the Smart Wrench platform for projects that require intelligent positioning and more advanced controls.
Selected configurations can use machine vision to identify the tool-joint area before gripping and torque application. Remote, wireless and centralized control options can further support mechanized or automated rig-floor workflows.
For space-limited drilling floors, SGPE provides compact configurations. Projects that require guided horizontal travel can use the SGPE10-E1 rail-mounted design. High-torque and extended-reach models suit larger rigs and demanding deep-well programs.
Key Features and Operating Benefits
Integrated Drill Pipe Makeup and Breakout
The machine combines pipe gripping, spinning, backup holding and torque application in one operating sequence.
This reduces repeated tool repositioning and gives the drilling crew one integrated system for compatible drill pipe connection work.
High Makeup and Breakout Torque
Depending on the model, maximum makeup torque ranges from approximately 80 to 140 kN·m, while maximum breakout torque ranges from approximately 110 to 160 kN·m.
The available torque range gives drilling contractors options for conventional rigs as well as deep and ultra-deep drilling projects.
Fast Drill Pipe Spinning
All five published SGPE models provide maximum spinning speed up to 80 RPM on 5 in. drill pipe, with maximum spinning torque of 5 kN·m.
The spinner handles rapid thread engagement during makeup and fast spin-out after breakout.
Controlled Final Torque
After the spinning stage, the hydraulic torque wrench completes the connection.
A repeatable mechanical sequence helps crews use a more consistent make-and-break procedure across large numbers of drill pipe joints.
Integrated Backup Holding
The lower wrench section holds the lower drill-string component against reaction torque while the upper wrench performs makeup or breakout.
This gives the machine an integrated counter-torque function during compatible operations.
Continuous Chain Spinner
The continuous-chain spinner provides rapid drill pipe rotation with broad contact around the tubular.
The arrangement helps limit unnecessary marking of compatible pipe and tool-joint surfaces during repeated spinning.
Quick-Grip Torque Wrench
The quick-grip system accommodates different compatible diameters within the approved range of the selected model.
This reduces unnecessary changeover when a drilling program includes several suitable drill pipe or drill collar sizes.
Machine-Vision Tool-Joint Recognition
Selected Smart Wrench configurations use machine vision and deep-learning algorithms to identify the connection area.
The recognition system assists positioning before gripping, spinning and torque application.
Flexible Control Options

Iron Roughneck for Land and Onshore Drilling Rigs
Land drilling floors vary widely in size and layout.
Compact rigs may need smaller equipment, while larger deep-well rigs may require higher torque and more horizontal reach.
The SGPE06-D1 and SGPE08-D1 provide compact options for tighter layouts. The SGPE10-D1 provides higher torque for larger conventional rigs, while the SGPE12-D1 adds greater reach for larger drilling floors.
Typical applications include conventional oil and gas wells, directional drilling, horizontal wells, deep-well drilling, tripping, stand building and land-rig modernization.
For an existing rig, model selection should consider not only drill pipe size but also the well-center distance, hydraulic supply, parking area and nearby pipe-handling equipment.
Offshore and Jack-Up Iron Roughneck Applications
Offshore and jack-up drilling floors require careful equipment integration.
Selection should consider machine weight, installation footprint, parking position, well-center reach, tool-joint height, hydraulic supply, structural mounting and control interface.
Current SGPE models weigh approximately 3.47 to 4.02 metric tons, depending on configuration.
Compact models can reduce the occupied floor envelope. The SGPE10-E1 rail-mounted configuration also allows project-specific horizontal movement when a conventional extending-arm design does not fit the available space.
For offshore drilling projects, SGPE can review the rig-floor GA drawing before final model selection.
This approach helps match the machine to the actual working envelope instead of selecting equipment by torque or nominal pipe size alone.
High-Torque Iron Roughneck for Deep and Ultra-Deep Wells
Deep and ultra-deep drilling programs involve long drill strings and frequent connection cycles.
In these applications, both makeup torque and breakout capacity become important selection factors.
Higher-capacity SGPE models provide up to 140 kN·m makeup torque and 160 kN·m breakout torque.
The SGPE12-D1 also provides approximately 2,365–3,840 mm horizontal extension, which can suit drilling floors where the machine parks farther from the well center.
The final configuration should match the actual tool-joint geometry, connection torque and rig-floor arrangement.
Directional Drilling, Horizontal Wells and Tripping Operations
Directional and horizontal wells often involve long drilling intervals and repeated drill-string handling.
A Drill Pipe Makeup and Breakout Machine performs the surface connection work required while crews drill, trip and build stands.
During tripping in, the spinner rapidly engages the threads before the torque wrench completes makeup. During tripping out, the torque system releases the connection before the spinner rotates the upper pipe out.
The equipment does not replace MWD/LWD tools, rotary steerable systems or other directional drilling equipment. Its role is to handle compatible drill-string connections on the rig floor.
This makes the system relevant to directional oil and gas wells, horizontal drilling programs, extended drilling intervals, tripping operations and high-frequency drill pipe connection work.
Stand Building, Drill-String Assembly and Pipe Handling
The same make-and-break functions support stand building and stand breakdown.
During stand assembly, the spinner engages the connection and the torque wrench completes makeup. When the stand needs to be broken down, the machine performs the reverse sequence.
The equipment can therefore work alongside top drives, power slips, pipe racking systems, hydraulic catwalks and other mechanized drill pipe handling equipment.
This combination makes it useful in broader rig floor pipe handling systems and automated tubular handling projects.
Drill Collar, BHA and Selected Workover Applications
SGPE models can handle compatible drill collar connections within their approved gripping and torque ranges.
The widest published range reaches approximately 9-3/4 in. drill collar.
BHA components vary widely in outside diameter, connection design and required torque. Customers should therefore provide actual component dimensions and connection data before using the machine for BHA-related work.
If a component falls outside the operating envelope, a dedicated Hydraulic Bucking Unit or another workshop assembly machine may provide a better solution.
Some workover rigs can also use a compact configuration when the drill-string size, required torque, hydraulic supply and available floor space match the machine.
Routine casing and production-tubing work generally uses different gripping ranges and connection procedures. Dedicated Casing Power Tongs and Tubing Power Tongs may therefore provide better application-specific solutions.
Rig-Floor Automation and Smart Wrench Integration
Modern drilling contractors increasingly combine individual machines into coordinated automated tubular handling systems.
The Smart Wrench can operate alongside a top drive, power slips, hydraulic catwalk, pipe handling system, pipe racking equipment, mousehole and drilling control system.
Depending on the project, SGPE can provide standalone, remote, wireless or centralized controls.
For automated drilling rigs and modernization projects, the engineering review should address operating sequences, control signals and required equipment interlocks before final integration.
This makes the system relevant to drilling rig automation equipment, automatic drill pipe handling systems, smart rig floors and mechanized tubular handling projects.

Iron Roughneck Retrofit and New Rig Integration
Existing drilling rigs may use manual tongs, separate pipe spinners or older powered connection equipment.
An Iron Roughneck retrofit can increase rig-floor mechanization without replacing the complete drilling system. Retrofit projects, however, require careful layout and hydraulic review.
The engineering team should confirm the planned parking position, well-center distance, tool-joint height, available footprint, structural mounting, hydraulic pressure, hydraulic flow and surrounding equipment.
The complete movement envelope should remain clear of the top drive, rotary table, power slips, mousehole, setback area, hydraulic catwalk and pipe handling system.
Compact and rail-mounted configurations can provide additional flexibility where available space is limited.
For a new rig, the machine position, hydraulic supply, mounting structure, parking envelope and automation interfaces can be coordinated earlier in the design process.
| Engineering Item | New Rig Project | Existing Rig Retrofit |
|---|---|---|
| Machine Position | Planned during initial design | Must fit existing equipment |
| Parking Location | Can be optimized early | Often limited by available space |
| Horizontal Reach | Designed around selected model | Must match current well-center distance |
| Hydraulic Supply | Can be designed for the machine | Existing HPU capacity must be checked |
| Structural Mounting | Integrated into original design | Existing structure requires review |
| Control System | Planned from project start | Existing interfaces must be confirmed |
| Equipment Clearance | Coordinated across the full rig floor | Existing obstacles may restrict movement |
| Rail-Type Layout | Can be included from the start | Useful where fixed reach does not fit |
Hydraulic Power Requirements and Rig Compatibility
Most SGPE models use 17.5 MPa rated hydraulic pressure, 21 MPa maximum system pressure, 140 L/min rated flow and 120 L/min minimum rated flow.
The SGPE08-D1 uses 16 MPa rated pressure and 17.5 MPa maximum system pressure, while maintaining the same published hydraulic flow values.
For retrofit projects, pressure and flow alone do not provide a complete compatibility check.
The engineering review should also consider hydraulic line size, hose routing, return arrangement, filtration, reservoir condition and simultaneous demand from other hydraulic equipment.
Customers should confirm available HPU capacity before finalizing the model.

Frequently Asked Questions About Iron Roughnecks
1. What is an Iron Roughneck used for on a drilling rig?
An Iron Roughneck is a hydraulic rig-floor machine used for drill pipe and drill collar makeup and breakout during oil and gas drilling operations. It combines pipe gripping, high-speed spinning, backup holding, torque application and powered positioning in one integrated system.
Typical applications include drilling connections, tripping in and out, stand building, drill-string assembly, drill collar handling and selected BHA preparation. The equipment can be used on land drilling rigs, offshore platforms, jack-up rigs, deep-well rigs and automated drilling floors. By combining several make-and-break functions in one machine, a Hydraulic Iron Roughneck can reduce the need to position separate pipe spinners, tongs and backup tools around the well center.
2. What drill pipe and drill collar sizes can SGPE Iron Roughneck models handle?
The SGPE Iron Roughneck range covers different drill pipe and drill collar sizes according to the selected model. The SGPE10-D1, SGPE08-D1, SGPE10-E1 and SGPE12-D1 handle approximately 2-7/8 in. drill pipe through 9-3/4 in. drill collar, while the SGPE06-D1 covers approximately 3-1/2 in. drill pipe through 8 in. drill collar.
Nominal pipe size alone is not enough for final selection. SGPE recommends confirming the actual tool-joint OD, drill collar OD, connection type and required torque. For selected BHA components, customers should also provide actual dimensions and connection data because BHA geometry can vary considerably between drilling programs.
3. What are the maximum makeup and breakout torque ratings?
SGPE models provide different torque capacities for conventional drilling, deep wells and higher-load drill-string connection work. Depending on the configuration, maximum makeup torque ranges from approximately 80 to 140 kN·m, while maximum breakout torque ranges from approximately 110 to 160 kN·m.
The SGPE10-D1, SGPE10-E1 and SGPE12-D1 provide the highest published capacities at 140 kN·m makeup torque and 160 kN·m breakout torque. The required model should be selected according to the actual drill pipe or drill collar connection rather than simply choosing the highest-torque machine. Connection type, tool-joint dimensions, rig-floor layout and hydraulic supply should all be reviewed before final selection.
4. How fast can an Iron Roughneck spin drill pipe?
The current SGPE model range provides maximum spinning speed up to 80 RPM on 5 in. drill pipe, with maximum spinning torque up to 5 kN·m.
During drill pipe makeup, the spinner performs the rapid thread-engagement stage before the hydraulic torque wrench applies final makeup torque. During breakout, the torque system first releases the connection and the spinner then rotates the upper pipe out. This combination supports repetitive connection work during tripping, stand building, drilling connections and drill-string assembly.
Actual operating performance should always remain within the approved pipe range and operating conditions of the selected model.
5. What hydraulic pressure and flow does an Iron Roughneck require?
Most SGPE configurations use approximately 17.5 MPa rated hydraulic pressure, up to 21 MPa maximum system pressure, 140 L/min rated hydraulic flow and 120 L/min minimum rated flow. The SGPE08-D1 uses 16 MPa rated pressure and 17.5 MPa maximum system pressure while retaining the published flow requirements of the range.
For a new drilling rig, the hydraulic system can be planned around the selected equipment. For an Iron Roughneck retrofit, SGPE recommends reviewing more than pressure and flow alone. Hydraulic line size, return arrangement, hose routing, filtration, reservoir condition and simultaneous demand from other rig-floor equipment should also be considered before confirming compatibility.
6. Can SGPE Iron Roughnecks work on land, offshore and jack-up drilling rigs?
Yes. SGPE offers configurations for land drilling rigs, offshore platforms and jack-up rigs, as well as selected workover and automated drilling-floor applications.
The best configuration depends on the actual installation environment. Land rigs may prioritize compact dimensions or longer horizontal reach, while offshore and jack-up projects often require closer review of machine weight, parking position, structural mounting, well-center reach and control integration. Rail-mounted or compact models can be useful where available drilling-floor space is limited.
For offshore projects, providing a rig-floor GA drawing allows SGPE to compare the equipment envelope with the well center, top drive, power slips, mousehole, hydraulic catwalk and surrounding pipe-handling equipment.
7. Which Iron Roughneck model is suitable for deep and ultra-deep well drilling?
Deep and ultra-deep drilling projects normally require careful review of both torque capacity and machine reach. Higher-capacity SGPE models provide up to 140 kN·m makeup torque and 160 kN·m breakout torque, which can support demanding drill-string connection programs within the approved operating range.
The SGPE12-D1 Ultra-Deep Well configuration provides the longest published fixed horizontal reach in the current range, approximately 2,365 to 3,840 mm. The SGPE10-D1 and SGPE10-E1 also provide high-torque options for suitable drilling-floor layouts.
Final selection should be based on the actual tool-joint OD, connection torque, working height, horizontal distance to the well center, hydraulic capacity and available rig-floor space.
8. What is the SGPE Smart Wrench and how does it support rig-floor automation?
The SGPE Smart Wrench is an intelligent Iron Roughneck platform designed for projects that require a higher level of mechanization or drilling rig automation.
Selected Smart Wrench configurations can use machine-vision tool-joint recognition and deep-learning-assisted positioning to help identify the connection area before gripping and torque application. Depending on project requirements, operating arrangements can include standalone, remote, wireless or centralized control.
The system can work as part of a wider automated tubular handling system alongside equipment such as top drives, power slips, hydraulic catwalks, pipe handling systems and pipe racking equipment. For automation projects, control interfaces, operating sequences and equipment interlocks should be reviewed during engineering.
9. What is the difference between an Iron Roughneck, a power tong and a pipe spinner?
An Iron Roughneck combines several drill pipe connection functions in one rig-floor machine. It can provide pipe spinning, high-torque makeup and breakout, backup holding and powered positioning during compatible drilling operations.
A Drill Pipe Power Tong mainly provides connection torque and may use a separate or integrated backup arrangement. A Pneumatic Spinning Wrench or Hydraulic Pipe Spinner mainly performs rapid thread rotation and does not replace the high-torque makeup and breakout function of a roughneck.
For drilling rigs that perform frequent drill-string connections, an Automatic Iron Roughneck provides a more integrated make-and-break process. However, routine casing running, production tubing operations and workshop assembly may still require dedicated casing tongs, tubing tongs or hydraulic bucking equipment.
10. Can an Iron Roughneck be retrofitted to an existing drilling rig?
Yes. An Iron Roughneck retrofit can increase rig-floor mechanization on an existing land or offshore drilling rig when the installation space, hydraulic system and structural arrangement are suitable.
Before selecting a retrofit model, SGPE recommends reviewing the planned parking position, well-center distance, tool-joint working height, available floor area, mounting structure, hydraulic pressure and flow, and the movement envelope around other rig-floor equipment.
Compact and rail-mounted configurations can offer additional flexibility where space is restricted. A rig-floor GA drawing is particularly useful because it allows the machine reach and parking envelope to be checked against the rotary table, top drive, power slips, mousehole, setback area and hydraulic catwalk.
11. What Iron Roughneck spare parts and maintenance items should be considered?
Regular maintenance is important for equipment that performs frequent drill pipe makeup and breakout cycles. Inspection should cover the continuous spinner chain, gripping surfaces, jaws, hydraulic hoses, fittings, cylinders, structural pins, lubrication points, sensors and control components.
Smart Wrench configurations should also keep machine-vision components clean and correctly aligned. For the SGPE10-E1 rail-mounted model, the guide rail and travel mechanism should be checked for alignment, wear and smooth movement.
Hydraulic oil condition and filtration can also affect the service life of valves, motors and cylinders. SGPE can support model-specific Iron Roughneck spare parts, equipment inspection, installation guidance and commissioning according to the agreed project scope.
12. What information should I provide for an Iron Roughneck price and quotation?
For an accurate Iron Roughneck quotation, provide the rig type, drill pipe size, actual tool-joint OD, drill collar OD, connection type, required makeup torque, expected breakout torque, hydraulic pressure, hydraulic flow, working height and required horizontal reach.
The rig-floor drawing, preferred control mode, ambient operating temperature, project type, quantity and destination also help SGPE evaluate the correct equipment configuration. This information is especially useful for offshore rigs, deep-well drilling, new rig projects, existing rig retrofits and automated tubular handling systems.
After reviewing the drill-string program, hydraulic supply and installation conditions, SGPE can recommend the appropriate model, control package and optional equipment and provide a corresponding quotation based on the confirmed supply scope.
