3. Are slip dies, slip teeth and slip inserts interchangeable terms?
Slip dies, slip teeth and slip inserts are common names for replaceable gripping parts used in rotary slips, drill collar slips, casing slips, spiders and safety clamps.
However, the actual parts may use different dimensions, backing angles, tooth directions and retaining features. Selection should therefore be based on the complete tool model and component dimensions.
4. Can I order tong dies or slip inserts by pipe size only?
Pipe size is useful for an initial review, but it rarely confirms the correct replacement.
Manual tong dies also depend on the tong model, jaw design and actual gripping OD. Drill pipe tong dies often grip the tool joint, so the tool joint OD is especially important. Rotary slip inserts also require the slip series, segment design, retaining method and quantity per set.
5. What information should I provide for replacement manual tong dies?
Provide the tong manufacturer, complete model, jaw type, part number, actual gripping OD and required quantity.
For drill pipe tong dies, include the tool joint OD. For tubing tong dies and casing tong dies, provide the pipe body OD, coupling OD and approved gripping area. Die dimensions and clear photographs of the complete jaw and mounting pocket also help confirm compatibility.
6. How do I select W-SDS, W-SDML or W-SDXL rotary slip inserts?
First confirm the complete rotary slip series because W-SDS, W-SDML and W-SDXL models use different body lengths and segment arrangements.
Then provide the drill pipe OD, insert dimensions, tooth direction, retaining features and quantity per segment. A W-SDML rotary slip insert may not fit a W-SDXL segment even when both slips handle the same pipe size.
7. What data do you need for DCS drill collar slip inserts?
Confirm whether the tool is a DCS-S, DCS-R or DCS-L drill collar slip.
Also provide the actual drill collar OD, complete slip model, insert dimensions, tooth direction, retaining method and quantity per set. Hardbanding, coatings or unusual surface wear should also be mentioned because they may affect the selected tooth profile.
8. Can SGPE manufacture custom tong dies and slip inserts from a drawing or old sample?
When the sample is heavily worn, photographs of the complete tool and measurements of the jaw pocket or slip segment may also be required.
9. What material and heat treatment do tong dies and slip inserts use?
SGPE commonly uses selected alloy steel with controlled surface heat treatment.
The hardened tooth surface improves wear resistance, while the tougher component body helps withstand impact, vibration and repeated rig-floor loading. The exact material grade, hardness and case depth depend on the approved drawing, tool model and customer specification.
10. Can SGPE supply reduced-marking dies for chrome or CRA tubulars?
SGPE can review reduced-marking tong dies and slip inserts for chrome tubing, CRA casing, coated pipe and premium connections.
Customers should provide the tubular material, gripping area, operating load, torque and acceptable marking level. Fine-tooth or application-specific profiles may reduce surface damage, but they must still provide sufficient grip for safe operation.
11. Should I replace one worn insert or the complete gripping set?
A single component may be replaced when only one nearly new part is accidentally damaged.
However, if several tong dies or slip inserts show rounded teeth, uneven wear or cracks, replacing the complete matched set usually provides more even contact and load distribution. Mixing new and heavily worn parts may cause unstable gripping and faster wear.
12. Are tong dies and slip inserts API 7K certified?
API Spec 7K covers certain manual tongs, rotary slips, spiders and safety clamps. However, a replacement tong die or slip insert is not automatically API-certified because it fits an API-related tool.
Customers should state any API conformity, API Monogram, third-party inspection or documentation requirements before ordering. Available records may include certificates of conformity, dimensional reports, hardness reports, material records and inspection photographs.
