Description

API 6A Casing Head for Oil & Gas Wellhead Casing Suspension

SGPE manufactures and supplies API 6A Casing Heads for surface wellheads used in oil and gas drilling, casing installation, completion, production, water injection, workover and mature-field replacement.

Also known as a Casing Head Housing, Wellhead Casing Head, Surface Casing Head, Oilfield Casing Head or Casing Head Assembly, this pressure-containing component forms the lower structural section of a conventional surface wellhead.

The housing connects to the surface casing and supports the equipment installed above it. Its internal bowl provides the landing profile for the casing hanger, while the body carries suspended casing loads. Together with the hanger, packoff and sealing system, the casing head also helps maintain casing-annulus integrity.

Project configurations can cover 2K, 3K, 5K, 10K and selected 15K working-pressure requirements. The final design depends on the casing program, minimum bore, hanger arrangement, upper and lower connections, material requirements, temperature and actual service conditions.

Available configurations include Slip-Type Casing Heads, Mandrel Hanger systems, Threaded Casing Heads, Slip/Weld Casing Heads, Flanged or Studded Casing Heads, High-Pressure Casing Heads, Sour-Service Casing Heads, Custom Casing Head Assemblies and Replacement Casing Head Housings.

Depending on the supply scope, SGPE can also coordinate casing hangers, packoffs, annulus side outlets, secondary seals, pressure-test ports, wear bushings, BOP interfaces, wellhead gate valves and other related API 6A equipment.

For a new wellhead, the technical review starts with the casing program and complete stack arrangement. Replacement projects usually begin with existing drawings, nameplates, photographs and critical field dimensions so that the mating interfaces can be checked before manufacturing.

Product Short Description

SGPE API 6A Casing Heads and Casing Head Housings provide casing suspension, annulus sealing and the lower pressure-containing interface for oil and gas surface wellheads.

Applicable projects can cover 2,000 to 15,000 psi, with slip or mandrel casing hangers, flanged or studded upper connections, threaded or slip/weld lower interfaces, BOP connections, annulus outlets, sour-service requirements and customized replacement designs.

Selection is based on the actual casing program, hanger bowl, minimum bore, pressure class, mating wellhead equipment and field conditions.

SGPE can supply a single casing head or coordinate a broader API 6A wellhead package for drilling contractors, oilfield operators, EPC companies, distributors and wellhead MRO projects.

API 6A Casing Head Product Overview

An API 6A Wellhead Casing Head normally forms the first major pressure-containing housing above the surface casing.

After surface casing installation, the lower connection secures the casing head to the casing. The machined internal bowl then provides the landing and load-bearing profile for the selected casing hanger.

When the next casing string reaches the planned position, the hanger transfers the suspended casing load into the housing. A packoff or related sealing arrangement helps isolate the annular space around the casing.

Side outlets provide controlled access to the annulus for pressure monitoring, testing and other operations defined by the approved well program.

During drilling, the upper connection may interface with a BOP stack, drilling spool or casing spool. Additional casing spools can provide further suspension stages in multi-string wells. During completion, the surface wellhead normally continues through the tubing head, tubing hanger and Christmas tree.

The casing head therefore combines casing suspension, annulus isolation, pressure containment and wellhead interfacing in one critical component.

Correct selection starts with the complete casing and wellhead program rather than nominal casing size alone.

API 6A Casing Head Pressure Ratings

Rated working pressure is one of the first specifications considered during wellhead casing head selection.

Pressure Class Rated Working Pressure Metric Equivalent Typical Project Context
2K Casing Head 2,000 psi 13.8 MPa Selected lower-pressure wellheads
3K Casing Head 3,000 psi 20.7 MPa Conventional drilling and production
5K Casing Head 5,000 psi 34.5 MPa Common drilling and production projects
10K Casing Head 10,000 psi 69.0 MPa Deep wells and high-pressure service
Selected 15K Casing Head 15,000 psi 103.5 MPa Selected high-pressure wellhead projects

Pressure class does not define the finished product by itself.

Two 10K Casing Heads, for example, can use different minimum bores, hanger bowls, upper connections, lower interfaces or material configurations.

The pressure rating therefore needs to be reviewed together with the casing program and complete wellhead arrangement before a 5K, 10K or selected 15K Casing Head quotation is finalized.

Casing Head Functions and Buyer Checkpoints

A casing head performs several functions at the same time, and each function introduces a different procurement checkpoint.

Function What the Casing Head Does Buyer Should Confirm
Casing Suspension Transfers suspended casing load through the hanger and bowl Casing OD, weight, grade and suspended length
Annulus Isolation Works with hanger and packoff to control the casing annulus Hanger, packoff and sealing arrangement
Surface Casing Interface Connects the wellhead housing to the surface casing Casing size, wall thickness and lower connection
BOP Interface Provides the upper drilling-stage connection Pressure rating, bore, connection and RTJ interface
Annulus Access Provides controlled side-outlet access Outlet quantity, size, connection and orientation
Wellhead Support Forms the lower base for later wellhead stages Complete stack and mating equipment
Replacement Fit Matches an existing installation Bore, height, bowl, ring groove and bolt pattern

This approach is more useful than selecting a casing head from nominal size or working pressure alone.

Casing Head and Casing Hanger Compatibility

The Casing Head and Casing Hanger operate as one casing-suspension system.

SGPE can coordinate Slip Casing Hangers and Mandrel Casing Hangers for casing heads and casing spools. Applicable hanger configurations can cover approximately 4-1/2″ to 20″ casing, subject to casing weight, suspended load, bowl profile and approved configuration.

Selection Item Information Required Why It Matters
Casing OD Actual casing size Initial hanger selection
Casing Weight lb/ft or kg/m Load and slip selection
Casing Grade Project-specific Mechanical review
Suspended Length Well-program data Casing-load assessment
Hanger Type Slip or mandrel Defines bowl interface
Hanger OD Drawing-specific Confirms bowl fit
Landing Shoulder Drawing-specific Transfers casing load
Packoff Interface Project-specific Annulus sealing
Bowl Profile Existing or new design Critical compatibility point
Service Environment Sweet, sour, injection or corrosive Material and seal review

Nominal casing OD only provides the starting point.

Two wells can use the same casing size yet require different suspension arrangements because their casing weight, suspended length and load conditions are different.

For an existing wellhead, a hanger drawing, physical sample or measured bowl profile can be especially useful when selecting replacement equipment.

Casing Head Connections and Wellhead Interfaces

The casing head connects the surface casing below to the pressure-control or wellhead equipment above.

Accurate interface information helps avoid unnecessary adapters, connection problems and rig-site modifications.

Interface Item Information to Confirm Why It Matters
Top Connection Size, pressure rating and type Matches BOP, casing spool or tubing head
RTJ / Ring Groove Mating seal interface Pressure sealing
Minimum Bore Required clearance Casing and tool passage
Surface Casing OD Actual casing size Defines lower interface
Surface Casing Wall Actual wall thickness Connection review
Surface Casing Grade Project specification Mechanical review
Bottom Connection Threaded, slip/weld or special Installation method
Hanger Bowl Required landing profile Matches casing hanger
Suspended Casing OD, weight and grade Defines hanger arrangement
Side Outlet Quantity Project-specific Annulus access
Side Outlet Size Project-specific Matches valves and instruments
Outlet Connection Flanged, studded or threaded Accessory compatibility
Outlet Orientation Wellhead drawing Rig and piping layout
Packoff Interface Hanger and seal arrangement Annulus isolation
Secondary Seal According to lower interface Additional sealing
Test Connection Where required Seal verification
Overall Height Drawing-specific Wellhead stack compatibility
Mating Equipment BOP, casing spool, tubing head or adapter Upper interface
Replacement Dimensions Bore, height, groove, bolt pattern and bowl Existing equipment fit

For a new project, the wellhead schematic normally provides the clearest reference.

Replacement projects require even closer dimensional control because two casing heads with identical pressure ratings and nominal flange sizes may still use different internal profiles, sealing arrangements or overall heights.

API 6A Casing Head Assembly and Supply Scope

A Casing Head Assembly may include more than the pressure-containing housing.

The final scope depends on whether the project requires a bare casing head, a casing-suspension package or part of a larger API 6A wellhead system.

Assembly Component Main Function Supply Basis
Casing Head Housing Structural and pressure-containing body Core item
Casing Hanger Suspends casing Casing program
Packoff / Seal Controls casing annulus Project-specific
Secondary Seal Provides additional sealing Where required
Wear Bushing Protects internal bowl during drilling Optional
Retention Components Retain selected internal equipment Design-specific
Side Outlets Provide annulus access Housing design
API 6A Gate Valves Isolate annulus outlets Optional package
Blind Flange Closes unused outlet Optional
Pressure Gauge Interface Supports annulus monitoring Optional
Test Port Supports seal verification Where required

A drilling contractor may only need a Replacement Casing Head Housing. An EPC contractor may require the housing together with a casing hanger, packoff, outlet valves and related accessories.

Defining the supply boundary early makes the technical review clearer and reduces scope gaps during procurement.

How an API 6A Casing Head Works

The casing head is normally installed after the surface casing stage and becomes the lower structural foundation of the surface wellhead.

The next casing string passes through the housing and is landed at the required position. The selected casing hanger sits in the machined bowl and transfers suspended casing load into the wellhead structure.

A packoff or related sealing arrangement then helps isolate the annulus around the casing.

Once this suspension stage is complete, the next BOP, casing spool or wellhead component can be installed on the upper connection.

At the same time, side outlets maintain controlled access to the annulus for pressure monitoring, testing and other approved operations.

This combination of load support, pressure containment and sealing makes the casing head a key interface between the downhole casing program and surface well-control equipment.

API 6A Casing Head Types and Configurations

Different well programs require different lower connections, hanger arrangements and stack interfaces.

Configuration Typical Selection Logic Main Search / Procurement Context
Slip-Type Casing Head Uses a compatible slip casing hanger Field casing suspension
Mandrel Hanger Casing Head Uses a defined mandrel hanger interface Planned hanger landing arrangement
Threaded Casing Head Connects to a compatible surface casing thread Threaded lower connection
Slip/Weld Casing Head Fits around surface casing for approved field installation Slip-on / weld installation
Flanged Casing Head Uses a conventional flanged upper interface BOP or wellhead connection
Studded Top Casing Head Uses a studded upper interface Reduced stack-height requirement
High-Pressure Casing Head 10K or selected 15K project configurations High-pressure wellhead
Sour-Service Casing Head Selected for specified H2S-containing conditions Sour oil or gas well
Custom Casing Head Built around project-specific interfaces EPC or non-standard project
Replacement Casing Head Matched to existing field equipment MRO and obsolete equipment

Slip-Type and Mandrel Hanger Systems

A Slip-Type Casing Head with Slip Casing Hanger uses gripping slips to transfer casing load into the hanger bowl. This can provide useful field flexibility when the final suspension point is established after the casing string is run.

A Mandrel Hanger Casing Head uses a defined mechanical interface between the casing string and hanger. Its landing and sealing arrangement follows the approved casing and wellhead program.

Threaded and Slip/Weld Lower Connections

A Threaded Casing Head connects to a compatible surface casing thread, so the RFQ should state the casing OD, wall thickness, grade and exact thread requirement.

A Slip/Weld Casing Head fits around the surface casing before the approved field installation and welding procedure is completed. This arrangement can suit well programs that do not use a threaded lower connection.

High-Pressure, Sour-Service and Custom Designs

A 10K Casing Head or selected 15K Casing Head can form part of a high-pressure drilling, gas or production wellhead. Minimum bore, casing load, mating connection, material requirements and service environment still need project-specific review.

For Sour-Service API 6A Casing Head projects, actual H2S, CO2, temperature and fluid data provide a stronger selection basis than a general request for a “NACE casing head.”

Custom and replacement configurations can address non-standard bores, connections, side outlets, hanger interfaces or stack-height requirements.

Casing Head vs Casing Spool vs Tubing Head

These components serve different stages of a surface wellhead.

Comparison Casing Head Casing Spool Tubing Head
Typical Position Lower wellhead foundation Above casing head or another spool Upper completion stage
Main Tubular Casing Additional casing string Production tubing
Typical Hanger Casing hanger Casing hanger Tubing hanger
Main Function First casing-suspension stage Additional suspension stage Tubing suspension
Lower Interface Surface casing Existing wellhead housing Final casing stage
Typical Upper Equipment BOP, casing spool or tubing head BOP, spool or tubing head Christmas tree or adapter
Annulus Function Casing annulus control Additional casing annulus control Tubing-casing annulus interface
Main Selection Basis Casing program Multi-string casing program Completion program

A relatively simple well may use one casing head before the tubing-head stage.

Deep or multi-string wells can require one casing head plus one or more casing spools before completion equipment is installed.

API 6A Casing Head for BOP Stack Installation

A Casing Head for BOP Stack must provide a compatible mechanical and pressure-containing interface during drilling.

BOP Interface Check Information Required Main Risk if Incorrect
BOP Working Pressure Rated pressure Pressure mismatch
BOP Bottom Connection Size and type Mechanical mismatch
Casing Head Top Connection Size and type Installation problem
Minimum Bore Required clearance Tool or casing restriction
RTJ / Ring Groove Seal interface Pressure-seal mismatch
Stack Height Equipment dimensions Rig-space conflict
Adapter Requirement Adapter or spacer details Unplanned field modification
Existing Equipment Drawings and nameplates Compatibility uncertainty

A BOP casing head connection should therefore be checked as part of the complete drilling stack rather than as an isolated flange interface.

For BOP replacement, drilling-stack modification or wellhead retrofit projects, provide the existing casing head and BOP information so that pressure rating, bore, connection and stack arrangement can be reviewed together.

API 6A Casing Head Applications

API 6A casing heads remain part of the wellhead through several stages of an oil or gas well’s lifecycle.

Application Main Design Focus Typical Purchasing Concern
Onshore Drilling Casing suspension and BOP interface Reliable rig-site installation
Deep Oil Wells Higher suspended casing loads Hanger and bowl capacity
Deep Gas Wells Pressure integrity and sealing Bore, pressure and materials
High-Pressure Wells 10K or selected 15K requirements Pressure-class compatibility
Offshore Drilling Compact interfaces and QA/QC Dimensional control and documentation
Production Wellheads Long-term annulus integrity Seals and service conditions
Water Injection Wells Injection pressure and water chemistry Corrosion and annulus control
Sour Oil / Gas Wells H2S service Material and hardness requirements
Multi-String Wells Several suspension stages Casing head and spool coordination
Workover Projects Existing wellhead condition Interface compatibility
BOP Retrofit New BOP on existing wellhead Top connection and bore
Mature-Field Replacement Obsolete equipment Drawing-based matching
Wellhead MRO Spare and replacement components Compatibility and availability

For conventional land drilling, the surface wellhead casing head forms the lower base for casing suspension and BOP installation.

Deep oil and gas wells can introduce greater casing loads and pressure requirements. Offshore projects often add tighter dimensional-control, preservation and documentation requirements.

During production and water injection, the housing remains part of the permanent pressure-containing wellhead.

Workover, BOP retrofit and mature-field replacement projects place greater emphasis on matching installed equipment, which makes drawings and field dimensions particularly valuable.

How to Select the Correct API 6A Casing Head

A reliable API 6A Casing Head selection starts with the well construction program rather than a catalog model number.

Begin with the surface casing. Provide its OD, weight, grade, wall thickness and required lower connection so that the casing-head-to-casing interface can be defined.

Next, identify the suspended casing size, weight, grade and available suspended-length or setting information. These details help determine the hanger and load requirements.

The RFQ should also state the required 2K, 3K, 5K, 10K or selected 15K pressure class. Pressure rating alone, however, does not confirm minimum bore or mating connection.

Equipment installed above the casing head must also be considered. When the housing connects directly to a BOP, provide the BOP pressure rating, connection and bore. The same applies to casing spools, tubing heads and adapters.

For the lower interface, identify whether the project uses threaded, slip/weld or another arrangement. Threaded configurations should include the exact casing and thread information.

The casing hanger must match the internal bowl and sealing geometry, so identify the Slip or Mandrel Hanger requirement where known.

Finally, provide annulus outlet requirements, operating temperature, well-fluid information and QA/QC expectations. Sour or corrosive service should include available H2S, CO2, chloride and produced-water data.

Material and Sour-Service Selection

Material selection should follow actual service conditions rather than pressure rating alone.

Service Information Why It Matters
H2S Content / Partial Pressure Supports sour-service material review
CO2 Supports corrosion assessment
Chlorides Important for corrosive water environments
Produced Water Influences corrosion review
Minimum Temperature Influences material toughness
Maximum Temperature Influences seals and materials
Well Fluid Defines retained-fluid environment
NACE MR0175 / ISO 15156 Requirement Applies when specified for sour service
External Environment Influences preservation and coating

A sweet oil well, sour gas well, water-injection project and offshore installation can place different demands on the same basic casing head design.

For a Sour-Service API 6A Casing Head quotation, provide actual H2S, CO2, water and temperature information whenever possible.

API 6A Casing Head Price and Quotation Factors

An accurate API 6A Casing Head price and technical quotation depends on the actual wellhead configuration.

There is no universal casing head price because pressure class, bore, connections, material, sealing system and supply scope can vary significantly from one project to another.

Price Factor Why It Affects the Quote
Rated Working Pressure Changes pressure-containing and connection requirements
Casing Size Changes bowl and lower-interface design
Minimum Bore Influences body and connection dimensions
Upper Connection Flanged, studded and custom interfaces differ
Lower Connection Threaded and slip/weld designs differ
Casing Hanger Slip and mandrel configurations change supply scope
Packoff / Seal Different sealing systems change component scope
Side Outlets Quantity, size and valve package affect cost
Material Class Sweet and sour-service requirements differ
PSL / QA Requirements Can increase inspection and documentation scope
Third-Party Inspection Adds external inspection activities
Replacement Engineering Requires dimensional matching and review
Accessories Hangers, valves, gauges and spools increase scope
Quantity Influences manufacturing and commercial planning

For an efficient Casing Head RFQ, provide the casing program, pressure rating, minimum bore, upper and lower connections, hanger requirement, material requirement and quantity.

This gives SGPE enough information to prepare a project-specific API 6A Casing Head manufacturer quotation rather than a generic price that may not match the wellhead.

Replacement API 6A Casing Head for Existing Wellheads

A Replacement API 6A Casing Head must match equipment already installed in the field.

Nominal pressure and flange size alone do not guarantee interchangeability. Different wellhead designs can use different bores, hanger bowls, seals, overall heights and side-outlet arrangements.

SGPE can review Replacement Casing Head Housings, Casing Hangers, Packoffs and related wellhead components for mature-field, workover and MRO projects.

The original GA or sectional drawing provides the best reference. When those documents are unavailable, clear photographs and field measurements can still support compatibility review.

Replacement Check Information to Provide
Existing Manufacturer / Model Nameplate or old documentation
Rated Working Pressure Existing equipment rating
Top Connection Size, type and pressure class
Bottom Interface Surface casing size and connection
Through Bore Actual bore
Overall Height Installed or face-to-face height
Ring Groove Type or available dimensions
Bolt Pattern Existing mating arrangement
Side Outlets Quantity, size and orientation
Hanger Bowl Profile and dimensions
Existing Hanger Drawing, sample or measurements
Seal Arrangement Packoff and secondary seal information
Photographs Overall and detailed views
Existing Drawing GA, section or wellhead stack schematic

Old part numbers can assist identification, but dimensional confirmation remains important before manufacturing.

This approach is particularly useful for replacement casing head procurement, obsolete wellhead replacement, mature-field wellhead MRO and compatibility-driven replacement projects.

API 6A Casing Head Inspection, Testing and Documentation

Inspection and documentation can be coordinated according to the approved project specification and purchase order.

QA/QC Item Main Purpose
Approved Technical Drawing Confirms dimensions and interfaces
Product Data Sheet Records final configuration
Material Records Supports material traceability
Heat-Treatment Records Supports material control where applicable
Dimensional Inspection Confirms bore, bowl and connections
Visual Examination Checks accessible surfaces
Applicable Surface NDE Supports surface-integrity verification
Applicable Volumetric NDE Supports internal-integrity verification where required
Hardness Verification Supports material and sour-service control
Pressure Test Verifies pressure boundary
Seal Test Verifies selected sealing interface
Traceability Records Links product and material documentation
Preservation Records Supports shipping and storage
Third-Party Inspection Provides independent witness when specified
Final Documentation Consolidates agreed manufacturing records

The final QA/QC scope depends on pressure class, material requirements, PSL, product configuration and purchaser requirements.

Operators and EPC contractors should define inspection, witness and documentation requirements during the RFQ stage so that they can be included in the agreed technical and commercial scope from the beginning.

Installation and Wellhead MRO

Before installation, compare the casing head identification and critical dimensions with the approved wellhead drawing.

Confirm the lower connection, upper interface, outlet orientation, casing hanger, packoff and required accessories before assembly.

The hanger bowl, RTJ grooves and other pressure-sealing surfaces should be checked for transport damage, corrosion or contamination. Landing and sealing areas should be clean before the hanger is installed.

During casing suspension, follow the approved hanger-installation and casing-load procedure. After assembly, complete the required pressure and seal verification before installing the next BOP or wellhead stage.

For a Slip/Weld Casing Head, field welding and installation should follow the approved project procedure and operator requirements.

Once the well enters service, routine attention should focus on pressure integrity, annulus condition and accessible wellhead components. Workover operations provide an opportunity to inspect packoffs, seals, hanger-related components and outlet equipment in greater detail.

For mature fields, keeping accurate drawings, nameplate records and equipment photographs can make future wellhead MRO, spare-parts selection and replacement procurement considerably easier.

Why Choose SGPE for API 6A Casing Head Projects?

SGPE supports new-build wellheads, customized configurations, replacement equipment and broader API 6A wellhead packages.

A technical review looks beyond nominal casing size and pressure class. Hanger profile, suspended casing load, minimum bore, upper connection, lower interface and annulus outlet arrangement can all affect the finished casing head.

Custom projects may require non-standard bore, connection, outlet or stack-height arrangements. These interfaces can be reviewed against the approved casing and wellhead drawing.

For 10K and selected 15K high-pressure wellhead projects, pressure class needs to be considered together with minimum bore, casing load, material requirements and mating equipment.

In sour-service wells, H2S, CO2, temperature and well-fluid information provide the basis for reviewing material and sealing requirements.

A BOP retrofit normally begins with the installed wellhead and the proposed BOP interface. Pressure rating, minimum bore, connection and stack arrangement all need to work together.

For mature-field replacement, drawings, nameplates, photographs and field measurements can provide the basis for matching equipment when the original casing head has become obsolete or difficult to source.

When a project requires a complete API 6A wellhead package, SGPE can coordinate casing suspension, tubing suspension, pressure isolation and production-control equipment within the agreed supply scope.

Related API 6A Wellhead Equipment

A casing head normally works with several other components in the surface wellhead.

The API 6A Casing Hanger suspends casing inside the casing head or casing spool. An API 6A Casing Spool provides additional casing-suspension stages in deeper or multi-string wells.

The API 6A Tubing Head forms the pressure-containing housing for the production tubing stage, while the API 6A Tubing Hanger supports the tubing.

Above these components, the API 6A Wellhead Christmas Tree controls production, injection, shut-in and surface well access.

API 6A Gate Valves provide pressure isolation on applicable annulus outlets and Christmas tree flow paths. Adapter Spools and Spacer Spools can provide compatible transitions when connection size, pressure class or installation height requires them.

On the final website, these product names should link naturally to their corresponding SGPE product pages.

Frequently Asked Questions About API 6A Casing Heads

1. What is an API 6A Casing Head used for?

An API 6A Casing Head forms the lower pressure-containing and load-supporting section of a conventional surface wellhead. It connects to the surface casing, provides the landing profile for the casing hanger and transfers suspended casing load into the wellhead structure.

The casing hanger, packoff and sealing system work with the casing head to maintain casing-annulus integrity. Side outlets give operators controlled access to the annulus for pressure monitoring, testing and other approved well operations.

Typical applications include onshore and offshore drilling, casing installation, well completion, oil and gas production, water injection, workover and mature-field wellhead replacement. During drilling, the upper connection can interface with a BOP stack or casing spool, while the casing head remains part of the permanent wellhead through completion and production.

2. What is the difference between a Casing Head and a Casing Spool?

A Casing Head normally forms the first major wellhead housing above the surface casing, while a Casing Spool sits above the casing head or another spool and provides an additional casing-suspension stage.

Both components can contain casing hanger bowls, packoff interfaces and annulus outlets, but they occupy different positions in the wellhead. The casing head connects directly to the surface casing, whereas the casing spool normally connects between existing wellhead housings.

A relatively simple oil or gas well may use one casing head before the tubing-head stage. Deep or multi-string wells often require one casing head plus one or more casing spools before the operator installs the completion equipment. The complete casing program therefore determines the correct arrangement.

3. What pressure ratings are available for API 6A Casing Heads?

Typical project requirements include 2K, 3K, 5K, 10K and selected 15K Casing Head configurations, corresponding to approximately 2,000, 3,000, 5,000, 10,000 and 15,000 psi.

Lower-pressure casing heads can suit selected conventional drilling and production applications, while 10K Casing Heads and selected 15K Casing Heads can serve deeper or higher-pressure wellhead projects.

Working pressure alone does not define the finished casing head. SGPE also reviews minimum bore, casing hanger profile, upper and lower connections, suspended casing load, material requirements and service conditions. For a 5K, 10K or selected 15K API 6A Casing Head quotation, send the casing program together with the mating wellhead information.

4. What casing sizes can an API 6A Casing Head support?

The selected Casing Hanger, internal bowl profile and overall wellhead design determine the usable casing range rather than the casing head housing alone.

Applicable SGPE casing-hanger configurations can cover approximately 4-1/2 inch to 20 inch casing, depending on casing weight, suspended load, bowl profile and the approved suspension arrangement.

Two wells may use the same casing OD but still need different hanger or bowl configurations because casing weight, grade and suspended length can vary. For this reason, include both the surface casing and suspended casing information in the RFQ rather than sending only the nominal casing size. This becomes especially important for deep wells, multi-string wellheads and replacement projects.

5. What types of casing hangers can work with an API 6A Casing Head?

Common configurations include Slip Casing Hangers and Mandrel Casing Hangers, provided that the hanger matches the selected casing head bowl and sealing arrangement.

A Slip Casing Hanger grips the casing OD and transfers suspended load into the hanger bowl. This design can provide useful field flexibility when the drilling crew determines the final suspension position after running the casing string.

A Mandrel Casing Hanger uses a defined mechanical connection and landing arrangement. In either case, the casing hanger and casing head must share compatible landing shoulders, load-bearing profiles and packoff interfaces.

For an existing wellhead replacement, send the hanger drawing, a physical sample or measured bowl dimensions so SGPE can check Casing Head and Casing Hanger compatibility.

6. What upper and lower connections are available for an API 6A Casing Head?

The upper interface can use flanged, studded or other engineered connections depending on the BOP, casing spool, tubing head or adapter installed above the casing head.

The lower interface can use a threaded, slip/weld or project-specific connection to the surface casing. For threaded configurations, include the casing OD, wall thickness, grade and exact thread requirement in the inquiry. For a Slip/Weld Casing Head, follow the approved field welding and installation procedure.

The selection process should also consider rated working pressure, minimum bore, RTJ or ring-groove interface and the overall wellhead stack arrangement. These details matter particularly in drilling-rig installations, BOP retrofits and replacement casing head projects.

7. Can an API 6A Casing Head connect directly to a BOP stack?

Yes. An API 6A Casing Head can connect directly to a BOP stack when the approved wellhead arrangement uses compatible pressure, bore and connection interfaces.

The casing head and BOP must match in working pressure, connection type, minimum bore and ring-joint interface. The project team should also check stack height and any required adapter or spacer because matching nominal flange sizes alone does not guarantee correct installation.

This verification becomes particularly important during BOP replacement, drilling-stack modification, workover and wellhead retrofit projects. When installing a new BOP on an existing wellhead, send the existing casing head drawing or nameplate together with the proposed BOP specification so SGPE can review the complete BOP casing head interface before preparing a quotation.

8. Can SGPE supply a Sour-Service API 6A Casing Head?

Yes. SGPE can review and configure Sour-Service API 6A Casing Heads for oil and gas wells that contain H2S or operate under other corrosive service conditions.

Actual operating conditions should guide material and seal selection. Provide the available H2S content or partial pressure, CO2, chlorides, produced-water information, minimum and maximum temperature and expected well fluid.

If the project specifies NACE MR0175 / ISO 15156, include that requirement together with the actual service data instead of simply requesting a “NACE Casing Head.”

Sour-service configurations can suit sour gas wells, high-pressure production wellheads and selected workover or replacement projects where the new casing head must match both the existing interfaces and the required corrosion-service conditions.

9. Can SGPE manufacture a Custom API 6A Casing Head?

Yes. SGPE can develop a Custom API 6A Casing Head around project-specific minimum bore, upper and lower connections, casing hanger profile, annulus outlet arrangement, overall height and other wellhead-interface requirements.

EPC projects, non-standard casing programs, BOP stack modifications, compact wellhead arrangements and obsolete-equipment replacement often require customized configurations.

Send the casing program, wellhead schematic, mating-equipment drawing or existing casing-head drawing as the starting point. SGPE can then review the pressure, bore, connection and hanger interfaces before finalizing the proposed configuration.

A custom casing head requires system-level review because casing suspension, sealing and mating wellhead interfaces must work together rather than as independent dimensions.

10. Can SGPE supply a Replacement API 6A Casing Head for an existing wellhead?

Yes. SGPE can supply and review Replacement API 6A Casing Heads, Casing Head Housings, Casing Hangers, Packoffs and related wellhead components for mature-field, workover and MRO projects.

The original GA or sectional drawing provides the best reference. If you no longer have complete drawings, send the existing manufacturer or model, rated working pressure, top and bottom connections, through bore, overall height, ring groove, bolt pattern, side-outlet arrangement and hanger bowl profile.

Clear nameplate photographs and field measurements also help SGPE check the critical interfaces.

This approach works particularly well for obsolete wellhead replacement, mature-field casing head replacement and compatibility-driven MRO procurement, where matching the installed equipment often matters more than selecting a standard catalog configuration.

11. What affects the API 6A Casing Head price?

The API 6A Casing Head price depends on the actual technical configuration rather than nominal casing size alone.

Key quotation factors include rated working pressure, minimum bore, upper and lower connections, casing hanger type, packoff and sealing system, side-outlet arrangement, material requirements, sour-service conditions, PSL, inspection scope, accessories and order quantity.

A 10K or selected 15K Casing Head, for example, may require a different body configuration, connection arrangement and inspection scope from a lower-pressure unit. Replacement projects can also require additional dimensional and compatibility review.

For an accurate API 6A Casing Head quotation, send the casing program, pressure class, minimum bore, connection details, hanger requirement, material and service conditions and required quantity.

12. Can SGPE supply a complete API 6A wellhead package with the Casing Head?

Yes. SGPE can supply the casing head individually or coordinate a complete API 6A wellhead package with Casing Hangers, Casing Spools, Tubing Heads, Tubing Hangers, Wellhead Flanges, Adapter Spools, Spacer Spools, API 6A Gate Valves and Christmas Tree equipment.

A complete package can simplify new drilling and completion projects because SGPE can review the pressure ratings, minimum bores, casing and tubing suspension interfaces, ring-joint connections and stack arrangement as one system.

This coordinated approach can also help EPC contractors, drilling contractors and operators reduce interface risks between components purchased from different sources.

For a complete API 6A wellhead quotation, send the casing program, completion program, pressure requirements, wellhead schematic and operating conditions. SGPE will review the project requirements and provide the corresponding technical proposal and quotation.

Available configurations can cover 2K, 3K, 5K, 10K and selected 15K working pressures, with slip or mandrel casing hangers, flanged or studded upper connections, threaded or slip/weld lower connections, BOP interfaces, annulus outlets and sour-service options.

For a new wellhead project, please provide the casing program, rated working pressure, minimum bore, upper and lower connections, hanger requirement, operating temperature and well-fluid information.

For a Replacement API 6A Casing Head, send the existing nameplate, drawings, photographs and critical dimensions to support compatibility review.

SGPE can also coordinate related casing hangers, casing spools, tubing heads, gate valves and other API 6A wellhead equipment where required.

SGPE supplies API 6A Casing Heads, Casing Head Housings, Custom Casing Head Assemblies and Replacement Casing Heads for drilling, completion, production, injection, workover and mature-field wellhead projects. Send your project specification, wellhead drawing or replacement data to SGPE, and our team will review the requirements and provide the appropriate technical proposal and commercial quotation.
