FC (Fail Close) valves and FLS (Flow Limiting and Shut-off Valve) valves have the following main differences:

I. Function Definition

  1. FC valve:
    • A fail-close type valve. When specific failure conditions occur, such as interruption of power source (such as loss of pneumatic, hydraulic or electrical power), loss of control signal, etc., the valve will automatically tend to close to prevent the fluid from continuing to flow.
    • The main purpose is to provide a safety mechanism in emergency situations to prevent possible dangerous situations from worsening. For example, in oil and gas pipeline systems, if an unexpected situation occurs, the FC valve can be quickly closed to reduce the risk of leakage.
  2. FLS valve
    • A flow-limiting shut-off valve. It has dual functions, being able to limit the flow of fluid within a certain range and completely cut off the flow of fluid when necessary.
    • Usually used in occasions where strict flow control is required to ensure that the fluid flow in the system does not exceed the safety or design limits. At the same time, it can also play a role in cutting off the fluid in emergency situations to ensure the safe operation of the system.

II. Structure and Working Principle

  1. FC valve
    • Structurally, it usually uses springs, counterweights or other mechanical devices to achieve the fail-close function. When working normally, the external power source overcomes these mechanical forces to keep the valve open. Once a failure occurs, the mechanical force acts to close the valve quickly.
    • For example, a pneumatic FC valve may use compressed air to push the piston and overcome the spring force to open the valve during normal operation. When the compressed air supply is interrupted, the spring pushes the piston to close the valve.
  2. FLS valve:
    • The structure is relatively complex and usually contains components such as flow sensors, controllers and actuators. The flow sensor detects the flow of fluid and transmits the signal to the controller. The controller controls the actuator according to the preset flow limit to adjust the opening degree of the valve to achieve flow limitation or shut-off function.
    • For example, an electronically controlled FLS valve can receive signals from a flow meter to monitor the fluid flow in real time. When the flow exceeds the set value, the controller sends a signal to make the actuator act, closing or partially closing the valve to limit the flow.

III. Application Scenarios

  1. FC valve:
    • Widely used in key parts of industries such as petroleum, natural gas, and chemical industry, such as emergency shut-off valves and safety relief valves. In these occasions, once a failure occurs, it is necessary to quickly cut off the fluid flow to prevent the accident from expanding.
    • For example, in the wellhead device of an oil well, the FC valve can be automatically closed when the wellhead pressure abnormally rises to protect the safety of wellhead equipment and personnel.
  2. FLS valve:
    • Mainly used in systems with strict flow control requirements, such as high-precision fluid transportation systems and chemical process control. In these occasions, it is necessary to ensure that the fluid flow is stable within a certain range to ensure the normal operation of the system and product quality.
    • For example, in the high-precision batching system in the pharmaceutical industry, the FLS valve can precisely control the flow of various raw materials to ensure the accuracy and consistency of drug production.

IV. Performance Characteristics

  1. FC valve:
    • Fast response speed: It can quickly close the valve shortly after a failure occurs and respond quickly to emergencies.
    • High reliability: Due to its relatively simple structure, it usually has high reliability and stability and is not prone to failure.
    • But the flow control ability is limited: It mainly focuses on the closing function in case of failure and has weak flow regulation ability during normal operation.
  2. FLS valve:
    • Precise flow control: It can precisely control the fluid flow according to actual needs to improve the efficiency and stability of the system.
    • Multifunctionality: It has both flow limitation and shut-off functions, adapting to different working conditions and emergencies.
    • Relatively complex: The structure and control system are relatively complex, which may require high maintenance costs and technical requirements. At the same time, in some complex working environments, it may be affected by interference factors, reducing its performance and reliability
