Description
API 6A Actuated Gate Valve for Wellhead ESD, Christmas Trees & Production Manifolds
SGPE supplies API 6A actuated gate valves for remote well isolation, emergency shutdown and automated flow-path control. Typical installations include production and injection wellheads, Christmas trees, surface test trees, flowheads, production manifolds, flowback packages and other high-pressure surface systems.
Each package combines an API 6A gate valve with a hydraulic, pneumatic, electric or electro-hydraulic actuator. The actuator output and stroke are matched to the valve operating load. Failure mode, control pressure, operating time, position feedback and installation space are reviewed as part of the same package.
Available operating modes include double acting, fail close and fail open. Common arrangements include hydraulic-open and spring-close, hydraulic-close and spring-open, pneumatic spring return, motor-operated control and electro-hydraulic fail-safe operation.
Typical enquiries cover nominal bore sizes from 1-13/16″ to 7-1/16″ and rated working pressures from 2,000 to 20,000 psi. The main product range uses forged pressure-containing components. Selected cast-body configurations require project-specific confirmation.
Options include full-bore through-conduit construction, API flanged or studded connections, hardfaced gates and seats, CRA trim, Alloy 625 weld overlay, manual override, limit switches and continuous position transmitters.
API 6A actuated gate valves commonly serve as production wing valves, master valves, kill wing valves, surface safety valves and wellhead emergency shutdown valves. They also provide remote isolation on surface test trees, production manifolds, injection wellheads, flowback systems, offshore platforms and unmanned well pads.
Before quotation, the technical review covers maximum differential pressure, minimum control pressure, required shutdown time, fluid composition, operating temperature, H₂S and CO₂ content, solids concentration, actuator orientation and control-system interface. This process helps prevent incomplete travel, slow shutdown, incorrect failure action and actuator-to-valve mismatch.

Pressure and Bore Reference
| Rated Working Pressure | Metric Reference |
| 2,000 psi | 13.8 MPa |
| 3,000 psi | 20.7 MPa |
| 5,000 psi | 34.5 MPa |
| 10,000 psi | 69.0 MPa |
| 15,000 psi | 103.5 MPa |
| 20,000 psi | 138.0 MPa |
Pressure rating alone does not determine actuator size. Differential pressure, stem diameter, gate and seat friction, packing resistance, spring load and minimum control pressure must also be considered.
| Nominal Bore | Common Application Context |
| 1-13/16″ | Compact high-pressure tree or manifold duty |
| 2-1/16″ | Production wing valves, injection trees and wellhead outlets |
| 2-9/16″ | Wellheads, surface test trees and production manifolds |
| 3-1/16″ | Full-bore production trees, flowheads and well test systems |
| 4-1/16″ | High-flow production, test and manifold systems |
| 5-1/8″ | Large-bore surface test and production systems |
| 7-1/16″ | Large-bore master valves and high-capacity wellhead systems |
Not every bore and pressure combination fits every valve family. Body design, end connection, material class, actuator arrangement and validation status all affect availability.
Engineered Valve-and-Actuator Package
An actuated wellhead gate valve requires more than a powered operator mounted on a standard valve. Valve load, actuator thrust, stem travel, failure logic and control signals must work together.
The selection process starts with the force required to operate the valve at maximum differential pressure. The actuator must deliver this force at the lowest specified control pressure while retaining a suitable operating margin.
Actuator stroke must match the complete stem travel. On a spring-return package, stored spring energy must also move the gate to the required safe position under the defined shutdown condition.
The engineering review covers hydraulic port location, control tubing arrangement, position-switch setting, manual override access and total actuator envelope. Treating the valve and actuator as one package reduces interface problems and lowers the risk of incomplete travel.
Remotely Operated Wellhead Gate Valve
An API 6A actuated gate valve allows operators to isolate well pressure without remaining close to pressurized equipment.
Hydraulic, pneumatic or electrical power moves the actuator piston or gearbox, which transfers axial force through the stem to the gate. Commands may come from a wellhead control panel, hydraulic power unit, RTU, local control station or emergency shutdown system.
Remote operation supports faster response during abnormal conditions and reduces manual work around the wellhead. It also allows operators to monitor valve status from a control room and isolate production, testing, flowback or injection lines from a safer location.
Where fail-safe action is required, stored spring or hydraulic energy moves the valve toward a defined position after loss of the normal utility supply.
Full-Bore Flow Path and Pressure Isolation
The gate moves clear of the bore in the fully open position, creating a straight flow path with low internal restriction.
This through-conduit arrangement supports crude oil and natural gas production, well testing, flowback, temporary production, water injection, gas injection and produced-water reinjection.
It also keeps the primary gate and seat sealing surfaces away from continuous production flow. Where the complete wellhead arrangement permits, the bore can accommodate wireline, slickline and selected well-intervention tools.
When the valve closes, the gate and seat assemblies form the primary pressure barrier. Depending on the design, line pressure or body-cavity pressure loads the seat against the gate.
Many slab gate configurations provide isolation from either direction. The exact sealing direction and body-cavity behaviour, however, depend on the selected design.
Available sealing options may include metal-to-metal gate-to-seat contact, metal-to-metal seat-to-body sealing, hardfaced surfaces, corrosion-resistant trim, secondary elastomeric or thermoplastic seals, stem backseats and packing injection or test ports.
Trim and seal selection depends on pressure, temperature, fluid chemistry, rapid gas decompression risk, solids content and operating frequency.
Actuator Selection Guide
| Actuator Type | Power Source | Common Operating Modes | Main Advantages | Typical Applications |
| Hydraulic | Pressurized hydraulic fluid | Double acting, hydraulic open/spring close or hydraulic close/spring open | High thrust within a compact envelope | Wellheads, production trees, test trees and offshore ESD systems |
| Pneumatic | Instrument air or gas | Double acting or spring return | Simple control where a stable air supply is available | Smaller valves and selected surface manifolds |
| Electric | Electric motor and gearbox | Motor open and motor close | Remote commands, position feedback and communication options | Gathering stations, injection facilities and powered well pads |
| Electro-hydraulic | Electrical command with local hydraulic power | Double acting or stored-energy fail-safe | Hydraulic thrust without a central hydraulic power unit | Remote wells, offshore platforms and unmanned locations |
The actuator output must exceed the calculated valve operating load at the lowest specified utility pressure. Nominal bore alone does not provide enough information for actuator selection.
API 6A Hydraulic Actuated Gate Valve
A hydraulic actuator uses pressurized fluid to move the piston, stem and gate.
Hydraulic operation delivers high output force within a compact structure. It therefore suits many 5,000 psi, 10,000 psi, 15,000 psi and selected 20,000 psi wellhead applications.
The actuator may use double-acting or spring-return operation. Available options include mechanical override, manual hydraulic pump override, local position indication, open and closed limit switches and continuous position transmitters.
The package can also include connections for a wellhead control panel, ESD interface, stainless steel control tubing, hydraulic hoses and quick-disconnect fittings.
Hydraulic Actuator Data
| Actuator Data | Engineering Purpose |
| Minimum operating pressure | Confirms operation at the lowest available control pressure |
| Maximum control pressure | Protects the actuator and control equipment |
| Opening pressure | Defines the pressure required to complete valve opening |
| Closing pressure | Defines the pressure required for powered closing |
| Opening volume | Supports accumulator and control-panel sizing |
| Closing volume | Supports reservoir and return-line sizing |
| Output force | Confirms available thrust against valve demand |
| Spring-return direction | Defines the safe position after pressure loss |
| Opening time | Confirms normal operating performance |
| Closing time | Confirms shutdown and ESD performance |
Valve size, differential pressure, spring design, hydraulic-fluid viscosity, control-line capacity and temperature affect these values. They are therefore calculated for the selected package rather than taken from one generic actuator specification.
Pneumatic Actuated Gate Valve
A pneumatic actuator uses instrument air or gas to move the valve. It can suit smaller valves and selected surface installations where the available air pressure provides enough operating force.
Operating modes may include double acting, pneumatic open with spring close or pneumatic close with spring open. Accessories can include solenoid valves, filter regulators, flow-control valves, quick-exhaust valves, position switches and manual overrides.
Hydraulic actuation usually provides a more compact solution for large-bore or high-pressure wellhead valves. Pneumatic selection therefore requires confirmation of air pressure, required actuator output and installation space.
API 6A Gate Valve with Electric Actuator
An API 6A gate valve can use an electric motor and gearbox for remote opening and closing.
Electric operation suits production stations, gathering systems, injection facilities and remote wellsites with a reliable power supply. The actuator can provide local open, stop and close controls, remote commands, torque protection, position limits and digital feedback.
Project-specific packages may also include an explosion-protected enclosure, offshore-duty protection, communication interfaces and a manual handwheel override.
The RFQ should state voltage, frequency, hazardous-area classification, enclosure protection, required operating time, ambient temperature, command signal, feedback signal and communication protocol.
A standard motor-operated actuator may remain in its last position after power loss. Projects requiring automatic fail-close action normally need an electro-hydraulic or another stored-energy arrangement.
Electro-Hydraulic Actuated Gate Valve
An electro-hydraulic actuator uses an electrical command to operate a local hydraulic power package. This arrangement provides hydraulic thrust without a central hydraulic power unit.
A typical system combines an electric motor, pump, reservoir, accumulator, solenoid valves and pressure switches. It may also include a local control cabinet, manual hydraulic override, position feedback and remote communication interface.
Electro-hydraulic systems commonly serve remote production wells, unmanned well pads, offshore platforms, injection wells, early production facilities and temporary production systems.
Failure Mode Selection
| Failure Mode | Normal Operation | Response After Utility Loss | Typical Duty |
| Fail close | Pressure opens the valve; stored energy closes it | Valve moves toward the closed position | Production wing valve, surface safety valve and ESD isolation |
| Fail open | Pressure closes the valve; stored energy opens it | Valve moves toward the open position | Selected duties that require an open flow path |
| Double acting | Pressure drives both opening and closing | Valve usually remains in its current position | Manifold switching and controlled isolation |
| Electric stay-put | A motor opens and closes the valve | A standard actuator may remain in its last position | Powered remote operation without spring return |
| Electro-hydraulic fail-safe | Electrical control operates stored hydraulic energy | Stored energy moves the valve to the defined safe position | Remote or unmanned ESD systems |
The purchaser should define the required safe position before actuator selection. A request for an “actuated gate valve” alone does not explain how the valve must respond after utility loss.
Fail-Close Wellhead Gate Valve
A fail-close wellhead gate valve moves toward the closed position after a shutdown command or loss of control pressure.
In a hydraulic-open, spring-close arrangement, hydraulic pressure opens the valve and holds it in service. When the control system vents the opening pressure, the spring drives the gate toward the closed position.
The command may come from a pressure pilot, ESD button, fire and gas system, fusible loop, wellhead control panel or RTU. Surface test tree panels, flowback systems, production manifolds and offshore shutdown systems can also initiate closure.
Closing time depends on the valve bore, differential pressure, actuator volume, spring force, control-line diameter, fluid viscosity, temperature and exhaust capacity. The RFQ should state the maximum acceptable shutdown time.
Actuator Sizing and ESD Integration
Correct actuator sizing directly affects valve reliability.
The calculation includes maximum differential pressure, stem diameter, gate and seat friction, packing resistance and, for spring-return designs, spring load in the relevant operating direction.
Minimum, normal and maximum control pressure must be defined together with the required opening and closing time. Installation orientation, ambient and process temperatures, cycle frequency, manual override arrangement and thrust margin may also affect the final selection.
An oversized actuator adds unnecessary weight, cost and structural load. An undersized actuator may stall before the gate completes its travel. The selected package should provide adequate force without creating unnecessary size or weight.
Control Accessories
| Accessory | Function |
| Three-way solenoid valve | Controls a spring-return actuator |
| Four-way solenoid valve | Controls a double-acting actuator |
| Hydraulic or pneumatic pilot | Provides pressure-pilot or control-logic operation |
| High- and low-pressure pilots | Initiate shutdown after abnormal flowline pressure |
| Pressure regulator | Stabilizes actuator supply pressure |
| Flow-control valve | Adjusts opening or closing speed |
| Quick-exhaust valve | Increases pneumatic venting speed |
| Hydraulic accumulator | Stores energy for shutdown or remote operation |
| Fusible plug or loop | Initiates shutdown during a fire event |
| Manual reset valve | Requires local reset after shutdown |
| Limit switches | Provide open and closed position signals |
| Position transmitter | Provides continuous position feedback |
| Junction box | Terminates control and feedback wiring |
| Stainless steel tubing | Connects hydraulic or pneumatic components |
| Manual override | Allows local operation after utility loss |
The customer should specify the control voltage, signal type, hazardous-area classification, utility pressure, operating-time requirement and feedback arrangement.
Remote Valve-Position Feedback
Position feedback confirms whether the gate has completed its commanded movement.
A basic package may use a local mechanical indicator. Remote systems can use separate open and closed limit switches, a dual-switch package or a continuous position transmitter.
These devices can send valve status to a wellhead panel, RTU or central control room. A position signal, however, does not replace correct actuator sizing. The package must still provide enough force to complete the full opening and closing stroke.
Valve Construction
Body and Bonnet
The valve body contains well pressure and connects the unit to the wellhead, Christmas tree, surface test tree, flowhead or manifold. The bonnet supports the stem, packing and actuator assembly.
Forged-body configurations suit the main high-pressure, sour-service, low-temperature and offshore product range. Selected cast-body designs require project-specific confirmation.
Gate, Seats and Stem
A slab gate uses a parallel gate with a port through its centre. In the open position, the port aligns with the valve bore. In the closed position, the solid section blocks the flow path.
Hardfacing can improve resistance to galling, wear and repeated operating contact. Gate, seat and secondary-seal selection depends on pressure, temperature, fluid chemistry, chlorides, solids content, cycle frequency and expected service life.
The stem transfers actuator force to the gate, while the packing system controls leakage around the moving stem. Selected configurations may include grease injection, packing test ports, secondary packing, a stem backseat, corrosion-resistant stems or low-temperature packing.
Adapter and Yoke
The adapter and yoke connect the actuator to the bonnet and maintain alignment between the actuator piston, stem and gate.
Correct alignment reduces side loading, packing wear and the risk of incomplete valve travel.
Material and Service Selection
Material selection begins with the actual operating environment. Important data include standard or sour service, H₂S partial pressure, CO₂ partial pressure, produced-water chemistry, chloride concentration, fluid pH, operating temperature and elemental sulfur.
Treatment chemicals, sand, scale and other solids can also affect the trim and secondary seals. For corrosive conditions, options may include CRA stems, CRA gate or seat components and Alloy 625 weld overlay on the seat pockets, body cavity or ring grooves.
Material classes may include AA, BB, CC, DD, EE, FF and HH. A general request for “NACE material” does not provide enough information for a complete material assessment.
For detailed information on slab, FC, FLS, manual, flanged and sour-service designs, refer to the related SGPE product pages.
Sandy Flowback and Well Cleanup Service
Flowback and well cleanup fluids may contain proppant, scale and formation solids. During these operations, the gate valve should remain fully open or fully closed.
An API 6A gate valve should not be used as a choke. Partial opening exposes the gate, seats and body cavity to high-velocity erosion, vibration and unstable loading.
For solids-bearing service, options may include tungsten carbide hardfacing, erosion-resistant gate and seat materials, additional actuator thrust margin and abrasion-resistant secondary seals. Grease injection points, cavity flushing provisions, defined inspection intervals and recommended spare parts can also be included.

Wellheads, Christmas Trees and Test Systems
Operators install API 6A actuated gate valves on production, injection and test wellheads. Common positions include production wing, master, kill wing, outlet and injection wing duties.
A fail-close production wing valve can form part of the surface safety system and close after the control system detects abnormal pressure, fire, gas leakage or another ESD condition.
Surface test trees and flowheads use actuated gate valves for master, flow-wing, kill-wing and outlet isolation. The selected package should match the test pressure, fluid temperature, solids content, control-line capacity and required closing time.
Production, Flowback and Injection Systems
Actuated gate valves allow operators to isolate individual wells, select test branches and switch production headers remotely.
Production manifolds can direct the well stream toward a production separator, test separator, flowback package, temporary production unit, gathering line or early production facility.
Water- and gas-injection systems use actuated valves for wellhead and manifold isolation. Material selection should consider chlorides, dissolved oxygen, treatment chemicals, solids, H₂S, CO₂, moisture, injection pressure and temperature.
Offshore and Remote Well Operations
Hydraulic and electro-hydraulic packages suit offshore platforms and remote well pads because they combine high output force with remote control.
An offshore package may include marine coating, stainless steel control tubing, corrosion-resistant fittings, explosion-protected solenoid valves, fire-resistant hydraulic hoses and remote position transmitters.
Remote or unmanned wells may also require low-temperature materials, salt-spray-resistant accessories, RTU communication, ESD integration and locally stored hydraulic energy.

Replacement and Interchangeability Review
A replacement project requires more than matching the nominal bore and rated working pressure.
The review compares the face-to-face dimension, full-bore diameter, end connection and ring-gasket groove with the existing valve. It also checks stem orientation, actuator dimensions, hydraulic port position and available installation space.
Functional compatibility requires the correct control pressure, hydraulic opening and closing volume, failure mode, movement direction and position-feedback arrangement.
Horizontal installations also require a review of actuator weight, stem support and maintenance access. Please provide the existing nameplate, GA drawing, actuator data sheet and installation photographs whenever possible.

Frequently Asked Questions About API 6A Actuated Gate Valves
1. What is an API 6A actuated gate valve?
An API 6A actuated gate valve combines a wellhead gate valve with a hydraulic, pneumatic, electric or electro-hydraulic operator. It allows local or remote opening and closing without continuous manual handwheel operation.
Typical duties include production wing isolation, master valve service, wellhead ESD, test-tree isolation and remote manifold control.
2. How does an actuated gate valve differ from a manual gate valve?
A manual valve relies on a handwheel or gearbox and normally requires an operator at the valve.
An actuated valve can receive commands from a wellhead control panel, ESD system, RTU or central control room. It can also provide automatic shutdown and remote position feedback.
3. Which actuator type best suits a high-pressure wellhead valve?
Hydraulic actuators usually suit high-pressure wellhead valves because they generate high thrust within a compact structure.
Pneumatic actuators may suit smaller valves where instrument air is available. Electric actuators suit powered sites requiring remote commands and digital feedback. Electro-hydraulic packages suit remote wells that need hydraulic thrust without a central hydraulic power unit.
4. What does hydraulic-open, spring-close mean?
Hydraulic pressure opens the valve and holds it in service. When the control system vents that pressure, stored spring energy moves the gate toward the closed position.
This fail-close arrangement commonly serves production wing valves, surface safety valves and wellhead emergency shutdown valves.
5. What is the difference between fail-close and double-acting operation?
A fail-close actuator uses stored energy, usually a spring, to close the valve after pressure loss or an ESD command.
A double-acting actuator uses hydraulic or pneumatic pressure for both opening and closing. It usually remains in its current position after utility loss unless another stored-energy device acts.
6. How is a hydraulic actuator sized?
The calculation includes maximum differential pressure, stem diameter, gate and seat friction, packing resistance, spring load and minimum control pressure.
Required operating time, temperature, installation orientation, cycle frequency and thrust margin are also reviewed. The resulting data may include actuator output, stroke, opening and closing pressure, hydraulic volume and estimated operating time.
7. Can the valve connect to a wellhead ESD system?
Yes. The package can interface with a wellhead control panel, platform ESD system, surface test control unit or RTU.
Control components may include solenoid valves, pressure pilots, accumulators, fusible loops, limit switches, position transmitters and manual reset valves.
8. What controls the valve shutdown time?
Valve size alone does not determine closing time.
Actuator displacement, spring force, differential pressure, control-line diameter, hydraulic-fluid viscosity, solenoid capacity, exhaust restriction and ambient temperature all affect the result.
9. Can SGPE provide remote valve-position feedback?
Yes. Available options include open and closed limit switches, dual-switch packages and continuous position transmitters.
The signal can be sent to a wellhead panel, RTU or central control room.
10. Can an API 6A actuated gate valve regulate pressure or flow?
No. The valve should normally remain fully open or fully closed.
Partial opening exposes the gate and seats to erosion, vibration and unstable loading. A choke valve should be used for continuous pressure or flow regulation.
11. Can SGPE supply a fail-close valve for sour-service wells?
Yes. A fail-close actuator can be combined with a valve selected for the defined sour environment.
Please provide H₂S and CO₂ data, produced-water chemistry, chlorides, temperature and pressure so the material class, CRA trim, hardfacing, secondary seals and Alloy 625 overlay can be reviewed.
12. Can SGPE replace an existing hydraulic wellhead gate valve?
Yes. The replacement review covers both dimensional and functional compatibility.
Please provide the nameplate, GA drawing, face-to-face dimension, end connections, actuator dimensions, hydraulic port location, control pressure, failure mode and feedback arrangement.
13. What tests and documents come with the valve package?
The inspection scope may include hydrostatic shell testing, seat testing, actuator functional testing, fail-safe testing, operating-pressure verification and position-feedback checks.
Documents can include the valve-and-actuator data sheet, GA drawing, material certificates, NDE reports, pressure-test reports, hydraulic pressure and volume data, operation manual, certificate of conformity, ITP and manufacturing record book.
